My understanding of the the canadian power grid problem a few years ago was the long transmission lines between cut off points that Hydro Quebec had at the time. The solar interference induced voltage surges and when Hydro quebec had to shut down sections to isolate the overvoltage, they couldn't contain the 'sections' in small enough areas and ended up with blackouts. I believe they have since analyzed and reallocated how their transmission grid works to reduce the likelihood of a repeat.

Dennis, my experience with a 2000 avalon (the other vehicle is a tundra..) with the brake light was the fluid level being down.

Eventually, we traced the problem to a pinhole leak inside the master cylinder where leaked fluid was never present visibly outside since the vacuum assist on the master cylinder was sucking up the leakage into the engine vacuum system.

Well, my (not quite a 4410) 4310 has been working great since the electrical harness overhaul. The intermittent drive shutdown and a broken fuse panel have been my only incidents in the 140 hours I have put on the tractor since purchasing almost 1 year ago. The tractor had 130 hours when purchased (dealer rental), so it now has 270 total hours and has been indispensible around the 'farm'. Should have bought it years ago....

I would concur with DennisCTB; if you need digging done it is usually cheaper to get the proper size backhoe or high hoe in and have the job done once and for all than it is to
futz around with a loader and tractor. I use the tractor (4310) to do the cleanup; for the digging, I get the local contractor who gets everything done in short order - they know how to operate the equipment, and the cost per hour is reasonable.

On the canadian JD parts, it is $492 (CDN). Note that the weight of the package is 198 lbs. Must be pretty hefty protection.

Update on repair:

Received tractor back; apparently (according to a note from the mechanic) not only did he install all PIPS applicable, but was instructed to change all wiring harnesses as well (by Deere). My fuse box had a broken fuse slot (for the work light) and that was replaced as well.

I have a theory on the 1 long flash code that I had been receiving before. When you first start the tractor, you receive one long flash that I now attribute to the 'startup' code in the computer controller (this is all hypothesis !). When I was receiving one long flash during operation of the tractor (when it would freeze forward motion), this may have been the computer being 'reset' internally due to a power interruption possibly due to a bad electrical connection.

This is just a guess.

The tractor has operated flawlessly on return for over 5 hours of grass cutting over 2 days; the grass was getting out of hand since the tractor was gone over 10 days.

I just had a truck load of screened topsoil delivered last week (the same day the tractor stopped working). I covered it with a tarp to keep as much rain as possible off it until the tractor is returned.

My previous load of top soil wasn't screened. It was difficult to spread around, and required a lot more work raking and flattening to get into shape. I kept it covered as well while I used it over a year period)

Covering also keeps many of the weeds out of it.

Bulher is the brand my friend who used to backup to cut grass in tight places purchased. Since his purchase he has
1) replaced a belt (partially his fault not realizing you don't cut in reverse
2) replaced the spacer rings when the linch pin was 'removed' by a low branch on a tree
3) repeated 2) again (no more linch pins - he put bolts in
4) returned the tractor to dealer to have one entire bearing unit replaced; apparently the bearing housing had only a few small tack welds in place rather than full welds
5) a flat tire (cant' really blame that on lack of quality, but it adds to the list

He loves the cut; is very disappointed in the quality.
Maybe it's because he took the red one instead of waiting for a green one :)

The manual I was expecting was a printed manual similar to the one the technician had with him when he first tried to update the tractor with PIPs to <br>
fix the intermittent stalling problem; during the update, he had to refer to the 'printed' manual he had to determine what to diagnose when the tractor refused to do anything after the first controller update (turned out he needed to calibrate the transmission; but calibration failed, and we ended up using <br>
my multimeter to diagnose the throttle potentiometer was out of specification; he went back to the shop, stole a throttle potentiometer off a demo tractor, replaced mine, and then got a different flashing code. Eventually figured out<br>
that during calibration steps, he was lifting himself off the seat to determine when the rear wheels started to turn (a step during the calibration) and this triggered the 'no one in seat' sensor that interrupted the calibration phase: moral for any budding technicians out there: during calibration - stay in the seat !<br>
The whole exercise was interesting to help with but alas, didn't solve the<br>
intermittent stalling problem; tractor is now in the shop having multiple updates, harnesses changed (at last call, they were waiting for another harness to replace). This is under warranty, but eventually I'll have to do this myself given the time it takes to diagnose something, I won't be able to afford the hourly labor rate to let them diagnose; I'd rather diagnose, then pay them to just fix the problem.<br>

After using the tractor for 2 hours last week, I noticed that the dash plexiglass had a 'foggy' appearance extending
from the bottom to 1/3 of the way up. It appears to be an
oily residue on the inside that has caused the fogginess.

Anyone have ideas on the source of this unsightly display?

Could someone clarify the difference between the 'power beyond' and a 3rd SCV? Can you use a 3rd SCV to control a
log splitter attached to the 3pth for example?

(Perhaps a log splitter that doesn't have it's own control
valve, and you use the 3rd SCV as the controlling valve?)

One rule of thumb I was told by a dealer was to depreciate the value of the tractor by $5 to $8 per operating hour.
(This was in CDN $; in US it would be $3 to $5 per hour)
In your case, this would indicate a reduction from a 'new' price (soley on usage) of about 200 x 3 or between $600 and $1000. This doesn't account for 'type of usage' or any other factors.

Don't know if this is a reasonable depreciation rate or not...

My only experience with hydraulics behaving similar to yours is water in the hydraulic oil; changing the oil was required.

Only problem so far on 4310 was on delivery where the flashing lights worked intermittently. Fix was to replace
the flashing unit (located under the dash console on the left side).

We are now into -14 C weather (cold for us) so we'll see how it starts; so far it has had no problem starting in cool weather (-8 C to 0 C)

A 4310, with 5' mower, 430 loader and HD bucket, and 3rd SCV (for mower) was around 18,100 US (equivalent - I'm in Canada). The increase in price from the 5' to 6' mower was about $350; I opted for the 5' because it reputedly has better cutting characteristics than the 6', and theoretically can cut just as much grass in the same amount of time since you can increase the ground travel time (we'll see in the summer ...)
