I picked up a new 790,4wd,wloader, R4s,ballest box, brush hog - and a new hat for 15K. Unless you are doing all lawn work go for the R4s. They are hard to find but the dealer let me use the turf until he located a 4set. No scuffing - I've had Ford and IH and I love my 790.

4ft Rotary cutter is recommended for the 650. Great tractor but may be somewhat of a compromise size wise. I purchased a 86 2WD with 189 hours on it last fall. The tractor is in incredible condition and I would consider 189 hours low.

Does the $11,000 for the 790 include the loader and SCV($500)? I was quoted 14,500 to 14,950 + tax in Colo. last fall for a 790 with JD loader. I ended up buying a 98 770, 60 hrs. with Great Bend loader(better specs than JD), mid pto, fully ballasted, 10cf dump cart and 513 cutter for 13K and no tax. Sure the 790 has 5 more hp but I would recommend a low hour, well maintained 770 any day. They are out there. Thats my $.02

I'm paranoid. How easy is it to tip one of these compacts over? I operate a JD 770 with GB260 loader in some hilly terrain. How can you minimize the risk? How can you tell you are getting to the limit before its too late? I have the non adjustable wheels with ag tires and carry a 5 ft blade or bush hog on the back. Give me some pointers please.

Excellent post Bill. That explains a lot and eases the fears of a smoking Boomer. I'm seriously looking at them. Come to think of it, it's been a while since I've seen a smoking Boomer problem posted here on the CTB. They may have even made this adjustment at the factory after they got wind of it. Again, thanks for the good news.

I am shopping for a 790. Up here in Upstate New York it can get cold in the winter. The dealer tells me a block heater is not really needed. My thinking is that if it won't start, my expensive tractor is worth nothing. Has the technology really come that far so a block heater is not necessary when it gets -10F?

Look at the Great Bend 200 line. If you don't have the SCV, GB has something that will work. I have a GB 260 on a 770 with the factory (JD) SCV. It works great! GB even paints it GREEN.

Duane, Since the 4000 series now replaces the 70's attatchments are getting hard to come by.I have a 1070 with the 440 loader and I also needed a set of pallet forks.After contacting all the JD dealers in Eastern Canada and not finding any I began to look for a set of used forks off a lift truck. I found a set of 42in. ones and had a frame made up by the local welding shop.At the same time I brought in the loader bucket and had them make a quick attatch system like the new 4000's.I can now switch from the bucket to the forks in seconds single handed.The forks were $100.00 and the frame and quick attatch system another $250.00
This tractor also had a back hoe but was not included in the deal but the hydralic outlets are there and they are controled by a valve on the left side of the seat down near the four wheel drive lever.You could instal your grapple arm to work off this control.I am in the process of making one to use with the forks.Great way to pickup logs.
I tried both the three point log spliters and the totaly independent ones and bought a stand alone. I just found it more practical to set the splitter up near the open wood shed and the log pile. I saw the logs then split them and stack the wood in the shed for drying.
The most practical attatchment that I have is a winch that mounts on the three point and I use it in the winter to haul the trees that I cut down.This way the tractor stays on the road and with the 150ft. of cable I can snake out the trees on the snow.The logs stay clean and you don't damage the other trees by driving through them with the tractor.
Check the antifreeze and the engine oil viscosity -40 is damm cold!

The 770 is a great tractor. I have not heard anything negative about them as far as durability, reliability and longevity. I just purchased a 98 4wd, mid pto, Great Bend 260 loader and 513 cutter with 62 hrs. I'm looking forward to using it for many years. It is made by Yanmar to Deere specs. 25 hp at the flywheel. The 70 loader adds 646 lbs. The other post had all the specs. The 4wd has p/s std. as well as 2 stage clutch for live rear pto.

Colin, I'm looking at a L245DT 25Hp. with ag tires, manual steering and gear drive. No loader or attachments. It has slight sheetmetal damage around the grill area. Asking price is $3500.00 but I think I can talk him down to $3000-3250. I've found a high quality loader for $3000 installed (Not a Kelley). I've been told that a good price is $5200-$6400 for this tractor. Maybe you can use this as a starting point, and then add in for the increase in Hp. for the 345 plus any attachments and condition of the tractor. Hope this helps. Dave.

Bruce, The L245DT is 4WD. the ag tires are in great shape wear wise but it has been sitting for some time and the tires are slightly cracked. The tractor does have some problems like it needs a new compression release cable and minor sheetmetal work around the grill area and lights, as well as a coat of paint. Butt it sure runs smooth and shifts great, no grinding or noises in the tranny. I would like to buy it if I can find a loader for it and I'd like to put a ROPS on it if I can find one.

All Deere dealers in my area want 14,450 to 14,990 for a new 4wd 790 w/R1 tires and JD 70 loader, plus tax. I found a nice '98 60 hr 770 with 4wd, loader, 513 cutter, ballast in the rear tires plus a JD utility cart serviced and ready to go for thousands less and no tax. Buying a low hour machine from a private party is the way to go if you can.

I have that particular blade. Overall it is a very good blade. I have had no problems with it. It is heavy and rugged enough to do job well.<br>However, I would change a couple of things. The first is a minor annoyance, but when changing the angle it can be difficult to get the pin through the main pivot body into the blade plate. If I were to redesign it I would ream the hole larger and weld in a pipe for the pin to ride in. The pin would then always be straight. The second thing is that the blade pivot plate needs to be larger and have more holes. This is a problem when grading along a foundation or wall, because when you offset the blade you can't angle into the wall. You can pull away from the wall or have the blade perpendicular to the wall, but you can't angle into it. This problem will probably be an issue this winter when I want to

I have almost hit the 50 hour mark on my kubota B2100. The manual says to change the hydrolic fluid and filter and clean the pick up screen. My dealer says this is not required. I was told to just change the filter. When I asked if this would affect the warranty he told me that even if I didn't change the motor oil or filter for 1000 hrs. the warranty would be valid- no questions asked. Should I go by the book or the dealer??<br>I am going to change the motor oil. The dealer recommends kubota 5w40 oil but the manual doesn't even refer to 5w40 as a recommeded weight. Do I use 10w30 (per the book) or 5w40 per the dealer?

You will want to buy the larger chipper. While you have the horsepower to chip 4 inch material all day long, to feed 4 inch material through a 4 inch chipper will take a lot more trimming that it will through a 6 or 8 inch.<br>Get Hydraulic feed!<br>The idea that dead stuff takes less power is misguided. green take less power and is easier on blades.<br>Consider a self powered tow behind. I has a 6 inch Morbark that I do use commercially. I bought it for less than I could have bought a new PTO model. I just tow it to where I want it and then use my tractor to feed it or haul away firewood. Additionally, when a friend needs it I can keep using my tractor. If you do insist on a PTO model look at used. There are a lot of used PTO models around here with very few hours on them.

Thanks for the help everyone. I found a perfect 60 hour '98 JD 770 with GreatBend loader and 513 cutter. I added a JD 35 blade. I'm all set for quite a bit less than a new 790. The competition for these tractors is stiff in Colorado. You have to be the first guy there to have any shot at all on a good used unit.

With those acres look at the JD790. I just finished a deal as follows:JD790,30hp dsl,R4 tires w weights,loader,brush hog for $15,000 <br>I don't have as big a deck (who cares) or hydo but I have used both and the 790 turns a sharp circle for my price.

I am looking for a reasonable? deal on a 790 4wd with a 70 loader. Talked to two dealers today one was at 14,990 + tax the other at 14,800 + tax. From looking at some messages on this site I thought I could get it done for 13,500 or 14,000. What do you guys think? What is a realistic price for this unit?<br>Need help in Colorado!!!! I'll drive east if I have to.
