I have needs to do similar work myself. I don't have 25K to spend on a machine<br>though. I have come across some track vehicles with the mentioned half-million <br>hours on them...and they look beat...and much older than I (30). But, can I expect<br>them to give me another few hundred hours? I watched a few old tracked loaders<br>sell at auction for around $2400 last weekend...They drove, lifted, etc. but <br>no doubt have seen better days. Is this a waste of money, given I am not one<br>to be able to ressurrect them myself?

Hi KenB-- I read this on someones web page...Not exactly a professional <br>opinion or statement. He had a photo lifting a septic system distribution box <br>cover with his backhoe. The caption mentioned

backhoe is not a good idea...". Seems like he was far more experienced with
tractors and the like than me (it doesn't take much!) so I thought I would
ask the experts. I am planning to build a log home and misc. log structures
and was thinking I could use the backhoe to lift logs up to maybe 6-8' or so.
These would be long (maybe 28') logs, so balance would be a concern. Weight
would vary...with 2000 lbs or so being the max. I've been thinking the purchase
of a full size backhoe might be great for me...I have empty land at this point.
I attended an auction last weekend in my area (Finger Lakes area in NY State)
where 2WD backhoes (FORD 555) sold for about $6500...with some 4000 hours
or so. I wasn't there to bid that time, but I thought perhaps at the next

I have a 1210 and get all my parts from a local dealer just north of Toronto. I am looking for a Hoe attactchment for it too - any ideas?

Thank you all for your comments. I am not surprised by them, as I figured<br>I was really thinking about doing something stupid. On the happy note,<br>I met with the contractor this morning in the woods and a) He doesn't think<br>I'm too crazy for placing the road where I have and b) He says he can cut<br>in the road in one day with a D5. So, for something under $1K, the road can<br>be cut in. Gravel and such of course is extra...but the whole road project<br>will come in less than $3K easy...(of course that solid giant boulder could<br>turn all this away).<br>Even better yet, the fellow is a great guy and I look forward to working with<br>him.<br>Thanks to all for your comments...Most appreciated. I have throughly enjoyed<br>reading this message board. My tractor days are coming closer.....Bruce
