I hooked up the Tiller yesterday. Worked great, turned the rock hard dirt into fluffy soil. I did have to go very slow with tiller set to the max depth.

FYI:<br>Just purchased the Tech manual for my 10 year old 855. JD sells them as engine and tractor. I bought tractor. This manual covers 655,755,855,955,756,856 models.<br>It seems fairly good for the price of $70<br>it's about 1 1/2" thick , has 5 or so fold out pages.<br>I need it to change the Hydostatic pump shaft.<br>Mine has the old bolt and washer, which broke. The newer models have a threaded shaft which is an available as Hydrostatic Driveshaft kit # AM118962<br>If anyone needs some specifications write and I will reply.

There's no reason the axle fix need be a "consumer fix" or be weaker.
It sounds as though the original problem is just that that steering
linkage doesn't turn each wheel the proper amount throughout its
whole range. As you reach the steering limit, the inside wheel is
following a much smaller radius circle, and has to be turned more.
(See the New Holland Supersteer machinations for the extreme example
of that.)

I'm kind of surprised that the onl fix they could devise mandates
changing the axle instead of just the steering linkages, but I
haven't looked at the original axles.

Thanks for the followup. I'm absolutely sure that it wasn't operated
correctly, and I wondered if after thrashing the gear train the
first time they just never fixed it properly. (It wasn't dealer
serviced.)

Their new MF needed a clutch at 300 hours, which indicates the
skill level of the chimps they have driving it. :-)

I'd look at the JD 5105. You'll have much better luck with the
slightly heavier tractor, and your wife shouldn't notice much
or any diference driving it. I believe it is even less expensive
than the 4700.

John, that may be true if this was a problem strictly when engaged in 4x4, but with it disengaged, the front axle gearing makes little difference in the equation. I just used mine today, and it really does make a whining noise when the front axle is engaged going down the road. No, I was not on dry pavement! My road was very icy and I locked up the rear tires when I released the forward pedal too abruptly when the front wheels were disengaged. I have often wondered if they had incorrect gearing and/or tire sizes in the front to make it whine like that. And Bo, we hadn't heard from you on this posting for some time, and we needed your words of wisdom. I ain't kidding on that one. :-)

I had a 7308 loader on my 1530 boomer. The loader seemed very wimpy compared to the one on my JD4300. I winced whenever I had to load something over the 700# mark. It also was very loose-sounding whenever it was driven over rough surfaces unloaded...gave the sounds of a loader that had 10 years of wear on the joints. Other than that, it was very easy to go on and off with, and the joystick control was ok (although very space consuming near your right knee, and also, completely disabled the 20 degree swivel function of that very nice seat due to knee interference).
If you do get one, make sure you get a heavy duty bucket!! For the extra couple of bucks you may spend on the heavy versus the standard bucket, it REALLY gives more peace of mind. I wish I had upgraded mine to the heavy duty version. Much better construction than the standard!!. Hope this helps.

Hi Terry!<br>I sent John Deere an Email last month pertaining to this issue, and told them that I wanted a real answer back, not a canned response that was generated by a computer. A very nice lady called me back and said she was going to look into the situation, as she had never heard of this situation before. I told her that my dealer told me the new tractors coming out had a revised axle on it, but the new axle wouldn't bolt up to the older tractors, and JD did not have plans to fix the axles on the older tractors. I told her to visit the JPlan site, and see all the postings that have been made concerning this issue. I am not the only one with this concern. I agree that a compact tractor should be able to make a 15' circle at a snail's pace without scrubbing the turf. I also told her that if they do replace the axle, I want new front tires as the rears still have the nibs on the tread, but the fronts are half worn off already. If it is a design flaw that they admit to, they should also take care of the tires. This is my 2 cents worth. I will also keep this posting up to date on what happens.<br>

You may have a point, but the fact of the matter is, when these mass marketed oil filters are designed, they may be designed for a variety of applications, with the filter being the same for a gas engine as it is for a diesel engine, only with a different number on it. In the automotive field, everyone has heard of the Cummins engine in the Dodge Ram truck. Dodge/Cummins have tested the filters and only allow 3 brands to be used in their engine: MOPAR, Fleetguard, and Cummins filters. (oil filter) <br>The reason is that other filters may not have proper filter material, and could result in the clogging of the piston cooling nozzles which can cause severe internal damage to these engines. These engines are designed to go 300,000 miles before requiring teardown. When a dealer does encounter a problem with a Cummins engine which requires replacement of the block, Dodge requires the oil filter that was on the engine to be sent back intact with the block. If it does not have one of the above listed filters on it when it comes back, they decline repairs to the dealer/customer. I am not sure if the diesels on these compacts have cooling nozzles, but I AM sure that a $6 or $7 filter is much cheaper than to pay for oil filter-related repairs down the road. For crying out loud, some of these units cost $12,000-$20,000! If a cheapie oil filter splits at the seam and locks up your motor days after you change the oil, will fram or allied give you a new engine with minimal hassle? I think I would rather have the backing from John Deere's Parts Division rather than ABC oil filter brand.

Jack, have you seen the blade in person? Is it heavy duty or is it just a snow blade? How much for the blade? I almost purchased a front blade last week, I didn't know there was a quick-tach for this loader, nor did I know that the loader brackets would need to be removed. This site has helped more than once!

Joe,<br>I had a 1530 Boomer with supersteer and a NH 1708 loader. Pretty easy on and off but had problems with the quick connects leaking all the time. (had to put a pan underneath the connections when it was parked inside) Also the standard duty bucket was pretty wimpy (my current JD 4300 has a heavy duty version) Something that was mentioned in another posting was that the loader rattled and appeared very loose/sloppy when it was properly attached according to the manual. When higher road speeds were used, it was almost unsettling to hear the banging from the attaching points and made me wonder if it was properly adjusted or assembled (both were checked). The biggest feat to overcome when driving a supersteer equipped tractor is when you turn the steering wheel one way, the supersteer mechanism will push the bucket the opposite way a few inches, which can make close quarter movements (i.e. next to a vehicle/house/tree or whatever) a little tricky. This is just the nature of the beast and can really only be observed with the loader on. (harder to see the shifting action going on without the loader attached). I also felt the 800# rating for the lift capacity was a little off. (600-700# loads made the loader grunt a little) This tractor was built heavy enough to handle a 1100# load, in my honest opinion. You could actually see the rear uprights bending inward when the loader bucket was full and travelling across uneven ground. New Holland also needs to get a different pressure relief valve spring to allow a little more pressure to get to the loader so it actually sounds like it is loading the engine a little before the hydraulics stall out and you end up backing out of the load to lift it off the ground. This of course was on my '98 model 1530, which may have been cured in newer models. Hope this helps!!

I'm a first time compact owner (B2710). The hydro trans and 4wheel drive plus a loader and hoe pretty much means I can dig anything easily and quickly. I've done alot of that (35ac, but only about 5 need any work). Seems to me, if you are digging/building/landscaping 4wheel drive and hydro are a no brainer. If you are farming/mowing then maybe gear and/or two wheel drive are a less costly alternative.<br>I really, really like the 2710. It is a digging beast.<br>(a former michigander, now a coloradoan).

I just bought a used SD 1540 this summer with 594 hours for 2750$ It is a grey mkt tractor but I love it so far. Have to turn my implement lower 3-pt pins to the inside because lift arms can't swing out far enough because of narrow rear end. Check that on the 1840. Can get parts at a place in Greensburg IN called Lowes Tractor and Eqpt. They have a web page. I love my machine. Have a bush hog loader to mount yet, but use a 4' bush hog and 5' finish mower. The dash is almost identical to the older New Holland/Fords.

The Case/New Holland merger is almost complete. Don't expect the compact line to be shut down. It is a cash cow in most respects. The new company name has been decided just recently. It will be CNH for Case/New Holland, Case management will largely run the new company. Perhaps, this will be a boon for the NH dealers who have difficulty obtaining services and materials. But, don't forget that Case will be 74% controlled by Fiat .... OMG.

As long as the amps of the tractor's alternator are more than your lights, starter draw and whatever else (radio, gps, whatever) times some adequate safety margin (1.5?) you can modify away with a reasonable likelihood of better vision.

I am planning to backfeed my main panel through a 220 outlet the I have in<br>in my garage. I know that I have to turn off the main breaker so that I do not feed into the main<br>feed, but is there something I need to watch for within my panel? Feeding the panel<br>with 220 won't hurt the 110 circuits? Had a friend say this could be a problem.<br>What do the rest of you think?

I have yet another observation that I found while mowing this morning. As I was driving through the pasture today, I found a nice patch of grass about equal to my lawn in texture.

If I have never mentioned it before, I am a service director for a new car/truck dealership, with 16 years mechanical background, and an ASE Master Certified Technician. I butt heads with the manufacturer five days a week, which is becoming my favorite pastime. I don't know how much I can do to make a change with JD, but I think this one deserves a little fight.
