RED (er Peeters) I LIKE THE IDEA !!! Back when lasers were still big and owned by universities, and transits were expensive even to rent, I built a barn and a couple decks this way, and laid out drain lines.

I bet you thought of it already, but you only need two dimensions for your trig tables - the RISE and the RUN are enough.

Have fun. If you had all that laser stuff, the work would get done too quickly and you'd maybe get caught doing something that didn't involve dirt and tractors :)

Sounds like a good price for the trailer, but I've never seen a single axle 3 horse trailer. However, if its certified for the load, then it sounds OK.

Spent a couple hours pulling wild mustard yesterday - I've heard my in-laws story of pulling out a 40 ac field by hand too many times to get away w/ doing any less on my little plot.

8" huh...one more reason for me to get my tractor bought - my Massey MMM goes up about that much, but only if I pull it up to transport.

I just got handed another article on pastures, and once again they say I should cut it. I have always mowed the front pasture, and although it does get cropped down more, it is thicker and healthier than the back pasture - so it does work.

Was hoping for moral support on NOT having to mow - the back pasture is a pain.

Just looked back and I'm the only one who mentioned chain link...so I guess I'm up.

I don't use chain link any more - I bought the flex tine harrow a few years ago.

But, I would say you could use a piece of 6 foot wide by 10 ft long. You couls easily pull more, but this is a good compromise when working around corners, arenas, and so on. I used to use several 6' T posts or some lumber for weight, then I found a piece of 2" channel iron (about 30-40# I recall) that worked OK. Too much weight and I dug too deep in the sand arena. For seeding, just the fence is sometimes used.

Hope my memory is good and that this helps. If my pastures ever dry out, I need to reseed a few sections too.

Check them both out, but IMHO, if you don't have a lot of tight places to get into, the 3010 may be better - more loader capacity, bigger frame/more weight, higher 3pt lift.

I don't think the 3010 is so big you have to worry about your septic tank or leach field (there are some good threads on that subject).

For the small $, I think you get more tractor w/ the 3010. For me, I looked at not moving bigger than the 2910 because I have less space for manuevering ad storage.

I haven't heard much bad about either of these units. Try them both, see what "fits" your situation.

Great suggestion Mark !!! Of course, I had to move several of these modern conviences because you didn't post this sooner! Its a lot easier to sleep if someone isn't constantly waking you up to tell you the light just came on.

On the other hand, a friend put out a motion light out back over his deer feeder...and after a few nights, the deer don't care about it. Its a great way to let you know when there is someting to look at.

Peeters: Good idea w/ the transformer powered ones. We bought some (expensive) cheap solar ones...and they didn't last as well as I hoped for.

When I got rid of my White Garden Tractor and traded for my Massey, one of the BEST things I found was that on the Massey, there was not an override - It was a pain to cut around some of my stuff and have to re-start the deck every time.

If I want to leave the seat - the PTO must be off or the engine quits. If the PTO is off, then I can apply the parking brake and leave the engine running.

Since I don't have any PTO equip that I want running if I'm not in the seat, this isn't a bad setup for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I saw a TC30, but w/ gears, and it looked like a good solid little tractor. HST is on the "must" list. I'll have to look again.

Our local NH dealer tends to be kinda pricey, but there's one about 40-50 miles away that has a good reputation. (the other Ford / NH stuff I saw was on a wholesalers lot, and the more I researched here and looked at, I stayed away from the ones on his lot)

Paul - the key MIGHT be in the word "Simplicity", if you meant that the AGCO was the same as a simplicuty. - I know that the Simplicity and Massey lawn and garden tractor lines are the same (even the sales brouchures and manuals are identical, the just change the names and colors). This gives you the options of looking @ Massey, Simplicity, and AGCO dealers. I wanted to add on a 3 pt to my Massey 2925, was told that the kit was available, told him to order it, but dealer just never got around to it so I gave up on the idea.

If design is the same, the same cyl that run hyd attachment lifts work the 3 pt, and the unit attaches to the frame rails and trans.

Hope this helps, and I'm not just telling you stuff you already know.

Actually - I just saw a 1620 this weekend. I have an old brouchure at home - I'll get you the numbers tonite unless someone else does first. I think 27 hp engine is right.

The one I saw is about the same age and condition as you described, w/ loader (I thought 7308, but again, I'll check), MMM, soft cab, extra rear hyd, for $12,300. Couldn't read hr meter, they were closed and I didn't want to open it up.

I saw this one when it first showed up on the yard - had all the manuals w/ it. It USED TO have a hyd top link for the 3 pt. Contols still there because they mounted on control blok for top link and aux hyd, but the cyl and connections are gone.

Can't help w/ the oil vs gas - have had both. If you can hide the propane tank and have a good dealer in the area, propane is cleaner burning, and givs the options of a gas stove if desired (or for future resale).

Don't know about a buried propane tank - I've only seen people hide them w/ landscaping.

As for heat - forced air allows for easier installation of central air - but in a new home you can run the ducts for it, you just end up w/ the extra blower / air filter.

I've seen several of the radiant systems using hot H2O in tubes in the floor. The houses are pretty comfy, and zone control in each area is nice. Especially good if you are going to have any tile work.

Actually, I've been away from the chemistry for a long time, but was pretty sure there wasn't any danger, but didn't want to go out on a limb that might get sawed off later.

The only safety tip left on my end - odd numbered carbon alchols are generally unsafe (like methanol), and even numbered ones are OK (like ethanol). So, nobody drink the windshield washer fluid out of their tires !!!!

My $0.02 worth:

If you aren't doing a lot of trailering w/ your horses, a 1/2 ton pickup is "enough" for most simple 2 horse trailers. I live in the upper midwest - its relatively flat and straight. Lot's of people get away w/ a two horse and a half ton like this. Most of the horse people I know who do a lot of trailering, or who plan long trips west or south, have a 3/4 ton or bigger.

As you move up to a bigger trailer, you will quickly bump up against the limits of your truck. The engine and transmission is probably fine. I'd think about the suspension though.

If you are going to more horses, or going to a 2 horse w/ a dressing room in front, both total weight and tounge weight go up quickly. This can push the limits of the load carrying ability of a 1/2 ton.

Another consideration that always concerns me is the fact that you are towing a "live" load. As you know, horses move, their balance shifts - and without enough suspension in the truck, you'll know it.

I re-read your post - a gooseneck is more stable to tow, a two or three horse stock style and small dressing/tack area may be light enough for your existing truck - but I'd be careful about much more.

Check the empty weight of the trailer, guesstimate the weight of the critters, tack, hay water, and so on, add in the people, and then check it all against the capacity listings in owners manual or on sticker inside the drivers door. (FYI: my aluminum skinned, 3 horse, slant load, bumper pull has an empty weight of around 4100#).

Another option which I haven't checked myself is to beef up the suspension of your existing truck...there are shops that can re-spring, improve shocks, etc and this might do the trick. I'm told its not too expensive, but not sure what that means.

Sounds like a fair price on the B2910, and a great price on the L3010 . . . I don't know what I'd do, because I am still looking, but you may want to consider floor space in your shed/barn/garage - I had a lot easier time fitting in the smaller tractor when I rented, but I'm a little crowded.

Also, had a couple turns/gates/trees that made the B series feel better.

That said, I'll turn over the floor to the esteemed "bigger is better" bunch :)

I'd hate to see you sell your tractor, I don't have one YET and am tired of the wheelbarrow !!!

Any neighbors that farm ??? For two bottles of brandy (spring and fall) mine comes over, loads my pile into his spreader, and uses it on his fields.

How much pasture do you have? If you are set up so you are able to rotate your grazing, you could get one of the smaller spreaders currently on the market. Shovel from the stall(s) into the spreader, and then onto the field w/ it. It is recommended that you don't spread onto a field you are grazing - spreads worms, etc.

Other comments are correct, horse manure isn't considered the best fertilizer, but on your own fields, the price gets better.
