I don't think I've seen so much bull**** as I've seen in some of the replies to R Biggs. I can't believe some of you guys are getting on his case because he wants to save a few hundred dollars. The dealer isn't going to give him a tractor at $200 less than he paid for it so why should R Biggs pay $200 more at the dealer than he needs to. The dealer is not a charity and neither is he. He might have given the other dealer a chance to match or better the best price he had but he is under no obligation to put the dealer's kids through college. As for the dealer, he is pretty short sighted. Tractors are like cars, there is not that much profit in the original purchase price because of competition, the real steady money and profit is to be made on service. That could turn out to be the most expensive oil and filter that dealer never sold because I don't think the guy is going to be buying much from that dealer any time soon.

Just make very sure that you don't want a hydro before you commit to a standard transmission. For my uses, especially loader work, I would not want anything but a hydro. I bought a collar shift and returned it after one weekend and had a hydro put on order. I simply need to change speeds and reverse too often for a standard. Just make sure you test drive each and get a feel for what you're buying.

I can't give you a direct answer but I can tell you that the sulfur content of the off-road fuel (colored red) is higher than is permitted for highway use. My Deere book says if sulfur content is higher than 0.5%, reduce the service interval by 50%. Well, I plan on doing that anyway (because of the relatively few hours I put on my tractor). I checked with the terminal where the fuel is distributed and the last time they tested the off-road diesel, the sulfur content was somewhere around 0.18% (my best recollection). Anyway, I use it and feel relatively safe in doing so. Off-road is not #1 or #2 and it costs about twenty-five cents less per gallon because highway taxes are not charged.

Are you sure you only have 4 gears. You probably have an 8 speed. There should be a high/Low lever somewhere on your tractor. I have a L2500 and the lever is on the left side. My Kubota's fist 4 gears are all very low. Every tractor I have ever used had High and Low gears. Hope this helps.

I have a 4200 with the same problem. I have suspected that the pressure required is heavy for safety (read liability) purposes. With the kind of pressure that's required, it's hard to say that the pedal was inadvertantly pushed or depressed. That's why cruise control is not an option but standard equipment. Hard to say that your foot slipped off the brake and accidentally floored the forward or reverse hydro pedal. My guess.

I forget. The one they had in stock had turf tires. Perhaps it was because it would have cost too much to buy all new tires and wheels which I understand would have been required. As a matter of fact, they still may have that 870 with the turf tires.

Mike, I have to assume that the manufacturer knows what it's talking about (that's why I bought the tractor from them (Deere) not someone else). It would not surprise me that the Deere hydro does not have a problem with break-in garbage as some other manufacturer's tractors might have. Perhaps Deere requires the hydro manufacturer to do something that some others do not. Perhaps they have a better filtration system. If Deere says a change of filters and fluid is not needed for 500 hours, I'm not going to cut their recommendation by 90% to throw money away. And, unless the service is actually needed, you have just flushed your money down the drain. If they want the engine oil changed at 50 hours, why don't we do it at five hours instead? It's the same principle.

I have used a landscape rake for the last three weekends on two acres for probably a total of twenty hours. I used it primarily to clear up rocks and limbs on land that was clear cut and the stumps bulldozed. It did a great job but it takes a lot of time and patience. The more you use it, the smoother and better the property gets (rocky and hard clay soil). Feel free to e-mail if you have any specific questions.

Assuming all is equal, there's one other thing: Resale/trade-in/equity value.<br>When I went to buy a tractor, I first looked at used as well as new. My first stop was a good Kubota dealer. When I asked about used, he pointed to a Deere and gave me a price. He apologized for the high price but said that Deeres command a high price on the used market because people would pay more for them. If I'm going to pay about the same for new but have a tractor that's worth more later and all is equal, which one should I buy?

My apologies. I may have had some (or all) of the responsibility for passing on that information. That is what my dealer told me when I bought my collar shift 4200. Three days later he got to prove it and picked up the collar shift and put the hydro on order. I have since found out that he/I was wrong and it only applies to garden stuff. My dealer however still adheres to that policy whether it's a compact tractor or not and, for what it's worth, he has given me the best price I've seen on this board since last fall. But, again, sorry for the misleading information.

Have a YM-220 Yanmar that the hyd. hiccups or bounces, with tractor running and rotary cutter lifted up it will sit there and about every minute or two it will drop a little bit and then bounce back, I've changed the hyd. filter, clean wire mesh suction filter and changed hyd. fluild with untiversal hyd. oil rated for john deere, any help would be appreciated.<br>Thanks in advance.

Paid $14,768 for 4200, 420 loader, R-4 tires, 5' Eagle box blade and bucket level indicator (FWD). Hydro was add $1,400. Included delivery and 50 hour service at my place. Got the hydro.

Paul,<br>I have a flat 2 1/2 acre piece of property that is half pasture and half home with lawn. Two years ago I went through the agony of having to decide between JD gear drive and hydrostatic. I bought the 755 hydrostatic and have never regretted the decision. The gear drive (770) was less money but it wasn't what I really wanted. For my purposes the hdro is superior for operations requiring the loader (lots of direction changes) and the hydraulic system is great for driving the backhoe. Regardless of what you decide, my advice is to buy the one you want --- you'll have it a long time. Good luck, Frank Bankes

You can find all sorts of dealers who will negotiate fair prices. There's a Kubota dealer within five miles of where I bought my Deere that will sell to me for less than Mr. Carver. That is not to say Mr. Carver's prices are improper or unfair. He seems like he is a very good dealer. It is simply a matter of getting out and seriously negotiating to the point where you are satisfied it's a good deal. I believe my dealer (and a lot of others in other areas) will beat the price of most other dealers and give good service. You just have to take the time to shop carefully and find them. The last car I saw purchased from a Ford dealer was identical to one offered at the big/low price dealership for $2,500 more. The smaller dealer knew we were serious when we started driving away. Ten minutes later he had sold a car. <br>Take a look at some of the deals people got on Deeres from their dealers--some of them are pretty good. Try those dealers.

I bought a 4200 collar shift and after putting about 3 hours on the tractor over a weekend, I called and said I wanted a hydro. They picked up the tractor later in the week and put a hydro on order. I now have the hydro and couldn't be happier with the purchase. The dealer told me (after I decided I wanted a hydro) that Deere has a policy that you can return the tractor within the first 30 days and get your money refunded or you can have them take it back within 90 and they will replace it with another model that you would prefer to have (you obviously pay the difference in price). Calling it a ripoff is not fair nor accurate. Getting more horse power from an engine will almost always cause more stress on most of the working parts of the engine and will, in many cases require closer tolerances. That all costs money. Additionally, the chances of failure also increase thus requiring more warranty service. They may expect higher failure of certain bearings in the warranty period than at the lower horsepower and thus charge more. <br>Charging more for more horsepower for the same basic engine is a standard practice with virtually all engine manufacturers even when all it takes (as in older Cummins) is changing a button in an injector pump because of the greater financial exposure of the manufacturer and the greater benefit to the consumer. Ease off on the ripoff accusations until you know what you're talking about.
