Art, I know my next step is to get out there and test drive these tractors. This should help me make my decision but being a one time tractor owner (the one I'm about to buy)I'm still concerned about maintenance cost and more importantly repair cost. If I go with a Kubota, which would be longer lasting and least costly should it need repair, the DT or the GST. Here I'm concerned with the overall cost and with all things being equal in annual maintenance and tender loving care on handling the machine, not abusing it. The JD is the only other make I'm considering, but the increased cost and future costs of maintenance and repair have me undecided. Do you have suggestions or comments on what I should consider in order to make that final decision?

That is my thought too, Tom. Those little 12 inchers must be screaming at highway speeds. And I'd bet if you added up the weight of tractor and implements plus the trailer weight you are right at max. Do you have room for larger wheels ?

And DON'T trust your FEL to hold up the front end. Use heavy duty quality jackstands all the way around.

I remember the discussions and hope the tires work out for you.

I seem to be given to loosely connected ideas this morning. I recall some discussion a long while ago. It generally was about the use of mismatched rear tires on a farm tractor and I couldn't understand why such a configuration would be used. Turned out that it was an old way of doing thing to compensate for the tendency of moldboard plows to push a tractor to the side and put more weight on one wheel. I don't know if there might be some relevance of the configuration to heavy mowers on side hills and I wish I could remember the discussion better.

Even if it worked it probably would compromise the tractor for other uses. Maybe somebody else here is more familiar with the idea.

As an afterthought I'll add that spontaneous combustion is a risk in composting. The size and moisture content of a pile should be considered. I haven't heard if commercial accelerates add to a risk of combustion or not, but it's something to be aware of. In my operation I do add soil to the leaves periodically and go back and forth with the tractor so I get a mix of soil and leaves rather than a thick layer of leaves above ground level.

I remember seeing several large piles of saw dust and chips smoldering away is a large urban park and reported it. The parks people already knew about it and the impression I got was that it wasn't uncommon for the piles to start smoldering before they disposed of them.

I have a bead blast cabinet and have battled the same issue with water in the air line. The problem is that the heated air contains a lot of water VAPOR. A water seperator will NOT remove vapor. The vapor must condense to a liquid state for a trap to catch it. I fixed my problems by installing black iron pipe in my shop and getting some distance between the regulator and the compressor. The black iron pipe acts as a heat sink and cools the air so the vapor will condense. Then you can remove the water. I am attaching a link of the diagram I used in my shop. Its important to install the risers on the air stub down off the main line as well as install some drain valves. This was a major project, but it fixed my problems and was a LOT cheaper than buying an air dryer.

I also have a 4400 and the 48 hoe. Having used the combo to dig several tons of boulders and large stumps, I concur with Dually, the 4700 seems like it'd be way more tractor than hoe. (Although I must admitt that I'd wish I'd gotten a 4700 just to have use of the bigger 460 loader).

On many occassion I've also wished I had a hoe with at least double or tripple the break out force of the 48, especially when trying to uproot 30 inch doug fir stumps.

And yes as was pointed out, if you don't have a good stable three point anchor via the stablizers and bucket the hoe can drag the tractor all around. But generally that can be over come with setup. I have water/cal filled 12.4x24's ag's on the rear and 7x16's on the front. This combo has no problem moving anywhere I want to go on my heavily sloped property. (I do everything real slooow.)

I don't abuse the tractor/hoe setup but push the setup as hard as I can with no apparent problems. I've actually dug up and pushed around boulders so large that they can't fit into my 430 loader. I also tend to run the engine speed down around 1500 rpm for better control of the hoe. This is more because I'm old and my cordination isn't what it use to be, not because the tractor/hoe setup requires it.

If the 4710 would take the 49 hoe, I'd upgrade to the 4710 now. But as I understand it that's not possible. So even though I'd like to have the heavier loader capablity it's hard to justify the upgrade to the 4700.

So from my experience the 48 and 4410 are very much a useful and fully compatible combination.

You have a killer truck ( 3/4 ton Duramax) Mines a 3500 4x4 LT crew cab. I have two duramaxs. As for towing, I have bumperpull & gooseneck trailers. The gooseneck is SUPER. I also have a JD4400 fel, 48hoe. All my trailers now have 2 7k axels w/16 inch D or E load range tires. When I bought my first trailer w/2 3500lb axels 12 years ago. I usually only had 3,000 lb loads or less. when you hit a curb when turning in town, or a pot hole on the highway too much weight is on the impacted wheel, not just 1/4 of the total weight. Bottom line, I replaced bent axles and poped 15 inch tires. Since I went with bigger axles and tires, I've had no problems and saved lots of money and time. Pay up front for heavier equipment, or pay for repairs and down time later. I personally can't afford repairs and down time.

Thanks Tom and everyone. Discretiion being the better part valor, I am going to have the dealer take a look. I am a tractor nubie but have discovered that the greater part of farming is breaking things and hurting yourself. Fun so far.

My 2 cents worth on the Duramax. Firstly I would say that there is ZERO comparison to the Ford or dodge. I have owned all. The Cummins diesel may be nice but the truck is not and chrysler dealers are even worse, I guess were supposed to believe that theyre going to get better with new owners..... The ford is a good truck but loud and slow compared to the GM. I have a 2002 GMC 3/4 ton extended cab 2500 Duramax/allison. It is undoutadly the best truck I have ever owned. I have 30,000 miles and not a hiccup. That is a first for me on any vehicle. I get an average of 18 mpg and as high as 22. the amazing thing about this truck aside from the stereo, leather 8 way seats, etc. is how quite it is and that it has the same pickup as a gas engine. The review I read that sold me initially said that the gas engine configured the same as the diesel was only 1/10 of a second faster in the quarter mile. I have spoken to many other Duramax owners and have yet to hear one complaint. I wish I could have said that about the dodge, there are three people in my neighborhood who had to lemon law theirs because Chrysler would not stand behind their product. That's the only and last one of those I'll ever own, Ive owned alot of fords and they have all been good, The best is my 95 Bronco, 95,000 miles and still lokks/runs new.

Has anyone had a chance to actually drive the new L4330 Kubota. I was prepared to purchace a TC45D after the first of the year, but the new Kubota looks interesting. I have yet to find any local dealers who have one yet.
