I have a leaking cyl. on my fel it's a ford model 770a the actuator is the one that raises the bucket. The dealer quoated me about $150.00 U.S. to do the work, or I can get a rebuild kit for $45.00 and try it myself.Can anyone give me a clue on how it comes apart? The only thing I see are some wrench flats on the end cap and some sort of cutout that could be part of a locking feature.

I have a new TC40d. When I start the tractor at idle speed there is a intermitent high pithched buzz that seems to be coming from the hydorstat filter area. When I speed the tractor up the noise seems to be more constant. Even when the tractor is warm the noise is still present. I changed the filter and checked to make sure none of the oil lines were touching, but I still have the noise. Any ideas??

William: There was a tragedy discussed here two summers ago I think where the escape route unfortunately proved to be a pond, so that's a good thing to keep in mind.

Myself, I think it's exactly situations and conditions that are being discussed and so I hope nothing contentious in any comments are intended. I think the situation of 'about to tip' is different from doubtful traction and the possibility of having a heavy implement uphill. I believe that my instincts tell me that there's a good chance that the implement might want to race the tractor to the bottom. However, if I'm ever faced with a situation, I just hope my instincts are right 'cause I know I won't have time to think about it let alone read about it.

In context, I believe what the loader dealer wants to know is if the tractor already has a spooling valve control assembly to operate the loader. If the tractor has it, then the loader is ready to mount, and the loader's hydraulic lines usually just click into quick-connect fittings on a valve assembly body. If the tractor doesn't have a valve assembly for a loader, then one has to be purchased and hooked into the tractor's auxiliary hydraulic system. A loader valve assembly, hoses and fittings do cost a bit, so there'd be an appreciable price increase if the tractor doesn't already have a valve assembly for a loader.<br>

If I were brand new to tractors and buying a tractor from a dealer, I'd probably get a price from the tractor dealer to mount a loader rather than trying to figure it out myself. If it's a private sale, the seller should be able to say if there are valves for a loader and what kind of loader they're for. However, you might find yourself in-between the tractor and loader dealers and might not have the background to ensure that the tractor actually has what the loader dealer needs to connect it to the hydraulics. However, I don’t think the situation is likely to come up. If the tractor isn’t being sold with a loader, it’s pretty unlikely that is has hydraulics for a loader, but you never know without asking.<br>

I started out trying to provide some background and introduction into jargon about loader hydraulics but the post got too long and probably would just be confusing. I think the most useful thing I can say at the moment is if the tractor does have valves, get the seller and loader dealer talking to each other rather than you trying to figure it out and being a go-between. At a more leisurely pace, ask questions here because there’s a wealth of knowledge. <br>

Dear Brian, based on my experience with Cub Cadet products I will say, at first glance, a great deal! Now I'll play "devil's advocate," and ask some tough questions. Most important, why is this much equipment for sale? Next, who is selling it, private or dealer? Do you know that its factory warranty is not transferable (it isn't)? Is the seller offering a warranty, and for how many hours/days? Do you know that MTD, the parent corporation has started moving away from the Mitsubishi designed and built 7000 series tractors (the 7305 is one) in favor of what I see is a much poorer American made machine? This may have an impact on MTD's desire to support the Japanese imports, then it may not, but it is worth thinking about. If you really like what you see, have an experienced compact tractor mechanic look it over. Make friends with a Cub Dealer.

A little correction to the ad, the 7305, like the 7275 before it, has a three speed gear box: high, mid, and low ranges. Not two as stated. Yes it may have two PTO's, mid and rear, and the mid was an option on that model. The tractor itself is an absolute gem, beautiful design and very reliable. The early Model 417 loader was much stronger than the 476 and was sold with a heavier gage bucket, it was also easier to take on and off. I don't like the 476. If the backhoe is the new 408 then it is a much better unit than the early 407. It is a very easy tractor to perform routine maintenance on, dreadful to do major surgery on because of the factory tools required.

To me, if all is in order, there ain't a heck of a lot of difference in the Cub's ability to do work and the JD's. Do you like yellow and white, or green? They are both swiss army knifes of the small tractor world. Good luck. Need to know more? I visit here often, just ask and we all will try to help.

You didn't specify what KIND of lumber. White Oak? Yellow Pine???

It makes a big difference.

Also, that lumber needs to be seasoned. It should be at least 1 year old.....the longer the better.

The old timers around these parts used to season it two years.

There are several old barns in my area that were built with lumber (usually white oak) that was from a woods on the farm that the barn was built. A man around here had made a portable saw mill and would set up in your woods and saw the lumber to your order. he died just a few years ago at the ripe old age of 97.

He could sit at your table, and tell you how many board feet was used on any barn you mentioned. (I must ad here, that there was no one left alive who could dispute him). He could also tell you about barns built in haste, and how much he'ed warned the farmer. You can then drive to the barn and see how crooked and twisted the timbers became within just 2 to 3 years from it's build date. the crooked barns are still standing, and whenevr someone trys to tear one down, it's evident how strong they are....but they are still crooked and twisted.

I got my tractor the day before Labor day and have been using it daily.I could not be happier.It cut my mowing time down from 6 hours to 2 hours.I am just getting used to it now and it is time to service it .Does anyone know if the filters are available from an autoparts dealer?

I think Tom is saying there may be other costs associated with upgrading even a well maintained older machine to get it to the standards of performance you desire. Adding up those modiffications will give you a truer picture of the total cost.

I was thinking about this problem again llast night. (yes...I have a life, but the conversation reminded me that I needed to fill my grill tank. And when I refilled it, that reminded me of the topic at hand.)<br>

Another phenomina that could have happened is as follows:<br>

If your valves are mounted on the bulkhead (domed ends of a tank) the vapor fitting your regulator is screwed into has a pipe attached to the inside. This pipe, is turned upward and ends short of the top of the tank, letting only vapor into the valve. Sometimes, during the filling process, liquid is splashed into the pipe, or if it is overfilled, liquid will completely fill this pipe.<br>
<br>
This puts liquid propane into the vapor system, which, as it gets to your regulator, and hits the orifice, and needle, has the cooling effect already described in previous posts. <br>
<br>
Now, believe it or not, there sometimes is a small amount of water in propane. This is usually caused by condensation due to temp. differences between product temps inside tanks and lines, verses the ambient outside air. <br>
<br>
Most suppliers ad Methonal to the L.P. as a way to disperse the water, and also as a sort of anti freeze. <br>
<br>
So, if liquid found it's way into the vapor system, and started the cooling effect, and there was enough moisture in the propane, the innards of the regulator could literaly ice up.<br>
<br>
This ususally happens when the truck tank is pumped almost empty, because his pump gets liquid from the bottom of his tank, where , due to the fact that water is HEAVIER than propane, the water is sucked into his pump when there is little propane above it. If your tank is almost full when this happens, there is a sudden surge in the liquid line filling your tank, and splash!!!! some water lands in your vapor line leading to the valve your regulator is hooked up to.<br>

at any rate, when water frezzes, it expands, this could alter the accuricy of your regulator. <br>

I'd still ask for a new one.

Even if the oil was topped up after charging some cylinders, it's fairly common practice to retract all cylinders before checking the oil level or the level may seem to go up or down every time it's checked. On most modern compacts, one oil reservoir feeds all hydraulics including PS as well as the HST or manual TX. Only the front axles on 4wd tractors have separate oil reservoirs.

Just a comment about blowing in the wind (Hmm, maybe I should take out my guitar after such a comment). I don't have a cab and I get covered in snow sometimes. I claw snow coatings off my face while muttering impolite sayings. I tried a snow mask last year but my glasses fog underneath the mask. I suppose snowmobile equipment might help but sometimes the job just isn’t fun. I'm not sure a front blower would be any better than my 3ph type. From comments by Murf I think, cabs also have their problems. Apparently the defrosters aren't up to auto standards.

My problem? Sometimes I don't have a choice which way to blow. There are several places between buildings or between parked vehicles and buildings where I have to blow straight back. When the wind blows from those directions I don't have much choice except to tough it out. You don't want to blow snow at buildings or cars or any place where you might have to clear by hand. The blown snow is wet and packed and sometimes contains gravel. It doesn't shovel very well.

Sometimes I may wish for a cab but my best solution is a hydraulic chute. The chute gives precise control over direction and can be changed quickly so I don't have snow in my face longer than necessary. I can also avoid blowing onto cleared paths and it's important when working near the highway. If you have to work near a highway, you have to be careful about letting snow blow across the highway and you want to blow it into the ditch.

Last comment about blowing in the wind. I haven't had to work at night. If I did, the work lights on my canopy would be useless since they'd mostly illuminate the flume. If I had to, I'd mount an additional work light on the front corner of the blower itself so it would shine out under the flume.

Rick,....I purchased a 790 2 years ago...with front end loader..wheel drive, mid mount mower... just thought I would add my 2 cents worth....beautiful machine....built like a rock....however after owning this machine...I would ..as you are leaning towards...probably look at the 990.......one of my regrets is that the 790 only comes with a 60 inch mid mount mower.....a 72 inch would have been much better and the machine certainly has enough power to handle it....and the last time I checked....Deere didn't offer a mid mount mower for the 990...and now I'm even wondering if they have a mid PTO option on that machine???? Don't know how cold it gets where you are.... but I am in Manitoba, Canada.......and we use the front end loader and 6 foot box scraper for snow removal...works like a charm....either way 790 or 990 you won't be disappointed......and as far as accessing the machine....never been a problem........ best of luck with your purchase.... Good idea limiting the pressure to the loader. No reason to have the hydraulic ability to lift way beyond what is safe. We have been running smaller hydraulic cylinders as well. That speeds up the response and serves to further limit lifting capacity.

when racing dirt cars we sprayed on some stuff called mud off, i seen others use disel fuel. this would stop mud from clinging to car. Seems to me it would work on the under side of a deck as well. call it far fetched if you want but i get a new tractor next week and i will try it for sure. didnt realize this would be that much of a problem.

Thanks to all for some great suggestions. As it is late in the season, I'll probably go with some winter rye and work on the terraces over the winter which is quite mild here in East Texas. Next summer's sun will take care of the winter rye then. I'm still thinking about strawberries, particularily in the soil that we have. We do plan to plant asparagus as a food crop but not expecting it to take care of our immediate problems. Thanks again to all.
