Sounds like a great price to me. Maybe location is a factor. I live in Northern VA and shopped 3 JD dealers that are in my area. I paid $17,300 delivered with tax. This was for a new 4100, automatic transmision with 410 loader, turf tires with ballast and 60" belly mower. This was the best price I could get.

Kevin, check back with your dealer. I was under the impression that part of the cab setup included a method of trapping the hot air that has blown over your engine; that air heats up your cab. As a matter of fact (I'm not able to look at my parts manual right now) I think you'll find that you'll need to remove some stuff in the summer :-)

GPM is measured under no load - out the pump, through the reservoir and back. Open Center means the fluid is flowing through the valve and then back to the reservoir when the system is not doing any "work" with a cylinder (or motor, for that matter)

Joe, I have a 20hp towable made by DR ( Country Home Products).It is rated at 4". Over 3 or 4 " is good firewood and Keeps tractor freed up. Prior posts have mentioned that ratings are relative to several factors, ie: hyd feeds. Mine is manual and works very well. Bird is right that 1 to 2" is easily handled by almost anything. DR will send you a comprehensive video on all thier products, I have several and recomend them for price and quality and service.

Paul, you can get the filters you need for your 184 by buying filters for a Massey Ferguson MF205. They were built by Toyosha/Hinomoto and used the same engine. Really the only mechanical difference was the rear end and it did not have live PTO. I really like the looks of the 182 and 184, the 205 is butt ugly next to a 184.

I am coming up on the scheduled 300 hr. hydraulic oil change for my TC 33D. I am thinking of going with synthetic oil to try and alleviate the cold weather squealing and general sluggishness, also to help with hydrostatic smoothness.Has anyone done this and has it helped? Have you had any problems? Leaking seals is the only bad scenario Iv'e heard about. Thanks for your input.

Murf: I too contacted the company about the zirc problem when it was still Allied/FarmKing. I was happy with the tech response I got from a design engineer. However, my contact apparently didn't connect with the idea that the zircs used in production should be changed. Actually, I thought the previous owner of my tractor installed the 90-degree zircs for some obscure reason. I suppose I'm also happy to know that my lack of down-pressure probably comes from my too tall tractor rather than my too short loader. The lack of down pressure with a flat bucket isn't really much of a problem. I angle the bucket down a bit when compacting gravel, and I use a box scraper for shallow excavations. I do believe that loaders are best for dealing with gravel etc., while digging and material handling are best left to other implements. Maybe that's a reason I have no complaints about the loader. I mostly use it for what it's actually designed to do well.

A veternarian friend of mine sold hundreds of cow magnets (a 3/4" by 4" smooth magnet that you run through a cow's gastrointestinal tract to pick up hardware they've ingested- they are pretty strong & cost about 3 or 4 bucks) Farmers would place them next to the fuel lines in their vehicles.They only work if you can't calculate MPG.Test the theory out with these then give the pair to a seven year old kid- he'll think he died and went to heaven.

Well, My dealer is going to mount up a GB220 loader on a JD4100 and let me compare to another 4100 with the 410 loader. He says I can operate both of them and test them out on the dirtpile and detatch and attach both models. Pretty good dealer to work with. I'll do this next week and then post my thoughts.

I am lookong at a used L245 and L245H tractor. Both units are 2200 and 3650 hrs but seem to run out fine with good rubber and sheet metal. does anyone know what type of problems if any were comman with these models? Also would anyone have a rough ballpark for value?

Started her up when it was about 55. I think the warm weather helped.
I still had to jump her so I suspect I may need to charge/replace my battery.

I'd like to thank everyone for their help and recommendations from last year when I posted asking for advice on the purchase of a tiller for my B2400. I took delivery last week of a Kuhn EL32/130, 50" tiller and so far I love it. This is a lot easier than fighting with that 25 year old Troybilt. I turned over last years garden in about 15 minutes. Since then I've made the first pass on approximately another acre. The only problems I can forsee is being able to afford all the seed for the larger garden and running out of ground to turn over. Still, I do have a 10 acre pasture that could use some renovation. I wonder how well it'll work on steep hills? <br>has anyone done any contract tilling and is there a market for it?

Thought I pick up on Bird's comment that his loader lift and dump work at the same time but not the lift and curl. First thing to know is that I'm guessing about some of it. Maybe somebody who really knows this stuff will comment. As far as I know, oil flow is continuous in open centred systems, and line pressures are around 100#. Pressure is developed when a valve is actuated, which closes the centre and diverts oil to a cylinder. Valves are hooked in series, so the first valve in the line that is actuated gets all the pressure, and later valves are disabled, or nearly so. In a conventional system, only one function at a time operates, and the valve nearest the inlet on a SCV assembly takes priority. In my system, the rear hydraulic circuit is first, and when it's in use, neither the loader nor the 3ph operate. There a 'however' here, although. When a double-action cylinder receives pressure and moves, oil on the other side of the piston has to have a return path. In a two hose system, that oil would be forced into the return line on the other side of the closed centre. As such, some pressure would be developed if a later valve in the line was closed, which would allow limited operation of several functions. If one of these functions was a regenerative circuit, which are often used in loader dump circuits, the dump might work reasonably well. Regenerative circuits require pressure but little oil flow. That might explain why a lift and dump might work at the same time, but not a lift and curl.

However, I believe that in 3-hose power beyond systems, the oil pushed out of an operated cylinder does not use the open centre flow return line. The third hose provides an independent return path to the sump. So, the above idea to explain how a lift and dump might work simultaneously doesn't wash, and I believe 3-hose systems are now fairly standard. An alternative idea is that the input to a regenerative circuit uses special passages within the SCV assembly, which are fed directly from the inlet section. In such an arrangement, it wouldn't make any difference which centre in the SCV assembly was closed, the regenerative circuit always would get pressure as long as one centre was closed. This last idea is guesswork on my part, maybe it's correct or maybe somebody will offer a better explanation. Even if my guess is wrong, I hope this note help demystify hydraulics a bit for somebody. Anyway, my best guess is that Bird's loader dump is a regenerative circuit while curl is conventional.

Craig, I've grown up in the landscape business and have seen guys come and go. They have new fancy equipment, and a nice new truck, a couple years later it's all for sale. My advice is to buy used equipment at auction if possible and upgrade as money permits. This is not a get rich quick business but it is a very fun and enjoyable business for me and my father. RE: eye bolts in the floor.

The guy we bought from (he built the pole barn) was a car nut & had 4 "V" shaped plates in the floor (I think they are standard for auto body shops) that he used for frame straightening. If the idea is for straightening things, it is better/stronger than eye bolts and is flush with the floor.
