Help....Does anyone have anyone know how a Cub Cadet stacks up against the big 3-4 compact manufacturer's? Any practical experience? I am leaning towards NH, but found that a comparable Cub Cadet tractor (30 hp size) was available much cheaper than NH/Kubota/JD. Is this a reflection of quality or durability?

I have not found the pedal (4300) pressures (forward or reverse) to be difficult at all. And I like the quick stop when I take my foot off the f/r HST pedals. If I don't want the quick stop, I don't take my foot off, but let up on the pedal slowly. And I wouldn't be without the ability to use the left/right rear wheel brakes at the same time I am moving forward or in reverse. I am very happy with my JD. Be happy with what you have, or trade it if you think something else is better.

I'm looking for something to supplement my rotary tiller. Does anyone know if a roller/leveler attachment is available for tillers to help smooth out the dirt?

Thanks for the input Kenny. Eric, I've come up with just about every "white elephant" mechanical oddity that I've seen in my career that might cause hard shifting without having to split the tractor, and they are certainly worth trying....particularly the shifting mechanism in the top cover. I just got fooled on one that had that as a problem when I thought it was a dragging clutch. But don't be surprised if it just turns out to be the heat built up after a couple of hours worsening some clutch warp just as Kenny says. Regardless of the white elephants, most hard shifting is simple clutch drag, and the cure is to rebuild the clutch. Try the simple things first, but be prepared for a clutch job.
As for the brakes, cutting out some of the bottom gasket is a good idea. I'll try that on the next one that I do. They do need more lower drain. The vent tube does tends to get plugged, and everyone who owns one ought to run a wire through it twice a year. The older series of JD compacts had many things in common with the rice-field tractors from which they were derived (rebadged). This old brake design is common to most Japanese imports of the period. It looks like a questionable attempt to deal with a situation where brakes get splashed all the time...like in a ricefield. Maybe they would have been better off to go ahead and let them get wet but allow them to drain more easily. The modern disk brakes are a much better solution.

Even though I have a TC29, I blow my 900 foot long driveway with a Toro lawn tractor and 44" blower. The Toro does a great job and, I suspect, is much less expensive than a TC18 with blower.

Is 10k a good price for a 1990 L2850d with an La650 loader, a couple of bushhogs, blade, and tiller. The tractor and loader seem to be in good shape, but the other equipment looks rough.

I agree that any transportation charge would be appropriate if the dealer wants keep the customer happy. At 50 hours, my dealer picked up the unit for free & charged no labor fees for the service. I just paid for the filters & oil.

The 1020 is a bit on the smaller side. I am working from memory and believe hp would be about 20 to perhaps 23. Could you mount a backhoe, yes, but it would have to be a smaller hoe. Say a 6' digging depth. Have you seen this tractor? You may want to see it first hand before making up your mind. As to the price, if you allow says 2K for the loader, another 1K for the implements then the tractor is $4,500.00 which isn't bad. Check hours and condition before you decide.

The L-2600 is in production. When comparing tractors the Price is not that much more for the L-3000 and the benifits to you are great for the money. Many dealers unfortunatly for you have probably decided not to stock the L-2600 for that reason.

Sorry but no Jerks are supposed to be in your hydro. Do call your dealer and let him Know so he can get it fixed for you. I believe you have a simple problem that should be easy to fix.

Unfortunatly for you there are many rops roofs offered but none that also take a enclosure. There are several cabs built such as Sims,Curtis and several others that only build top end cabs with full steel doors. The later cabs are not as easy to remove as the first names that I mentioned but they do give you a bit more comfort when using them. I will also offer that that is to the best of my knowledge.

Bruce - My JD 4500 4x4 entered the shop last week for the axle replacement. The issue of scuffing was not my major concern, but the R4 tires are wearing badly on the inside with only 67 hours on the tractor. Randy

I suspect the RV antifreeze you were looking at was already diluted. RV antifreeze (propylene glycol) is probably the most expensive antifreeze used but it's not nearly as toxic as the others (calcium chloride, ethylene glycol and methanol). Calcium chloride's advantage is its solutions are heavier than straight water (the others are lighter), disadvantage it's corrosive to metal. Ethylene glycol, commonly called "permanent antifreeze", is what we normally use in engine cooling systems. Methanol is an alcohol, sometimes called "wood alcohol" was used for many years for engines but it tended to evaporate so it wasn't "permanent" and was replaced by ethylene glycol. Methanol is used as the antifreeze in windshield washer fluid but I would hesitate to use windshield washer fluid in my tires because I don't know what else is in it. (Probably a dye and some detergent) You can buy pure methanol at most hardware stores but it should be available in larger containers at lower prices somewhere else. I just don't know where. Hope this helps.

I just the opposite experience when I was looking. The New holland dealer only wanted to sell me a hydro and told me no one would mow with a gear transmission. The JD dealer was willing to work with what I wanted.
