I took delivery of my 4300 HST with 430 FEL and 60 inch deck last July. I went to my dealer about 10 weeks ago with a list of the updates I wanted him to do, including the new axle. He told me he had to speak to the JD rep. I told him very nicely, that he should tell the rep I was very upset about these issues. Next thing I know he has all the parts coming in, the service scheduled. Thanks to this board I had a lot of information. The dealer was totally honorable in taking care of everything. Obviously it would have been better to not have any issues but I won't complain.

My father has a 1949 Ford 8N that the rear axle/wheel seals leak on terribly. He has replaced them a few times, but the will start leaking again in very short order. And needless to say the rear brakes don't work great when covered with grease.Does anyone have a fix for this? New seals are not the answer it seems... I thought i read someplace that the 1950 model 8N's used a double, was this due to the leaking and would that seal work on that this tractor.Any suggestions are more than welcome.Thanks

I got a quote over the phone on a TC29D FWD S.S turf tires loaded with a tube and calcium, 7308 Loader, and 60" mid mount side discharge mower for $19,500. To upgrade to a 72" mower was $475 and to go to a rear discharge was another $85. To upgrade to a TC33D was another $600. This put it at $20,660. I am now trying to work the price to $18,750-$19,000 for a TC33D FWD S.S 7308 loader, 72" mid mount rear discharge mower.

Good Luck and keep in touch with you bargaining. I am also ready to buy as soon as a dealer gives me the best price.

Does any one have any experience switching the backhoe and 60" belly mower on a TC33D? I've got both and was wondering how much of a pain it's going to be to make the switch every two weeks or so.I think all the hardware needs to be removed in order to install the sub frame. Not sure what model Bush hog, I know its bushhog as thats on a stamped plate bolted to the gearbox, but the thing has been repaired and repainted, I will look for a model. Its a heavy duty sucker, at least 10ga steel and a 4 place adjustable rear wheel.

I got a Bondioli&Pavesi (metric)driveshaft from central tractor with a 75hp rating that I might need to clip 1-2 inches off of. Now if bush hog is using metrics, there is no shear pin in the shaft itself, as u know the waltersheids are round with 2 protrubing ends, the bondioli are tri corner - hence there can be no slippage.

I suppose I COULD weld a tubular shaft near an end (inner/outer) with a pin, but it will no longer fit inside the cover. My other option is to use a limiter.

However, when I was at my cub dealer he said he had never seen an implement with a splined shaft, yet every implement I have seen anywhere else (king, woods bush etc) use splined ends on the mowers, tillers, post holers etc.

There seems to be no standardization as well as support available. A few friends at work are new to tractors also (8n and 861), using the same implements and there seems to be very little places to go. Over the last 3-4 days I searched every catalog, every website and went to a number of stores just to learn what the shaft sizes were and ratings and what parts etc are available. what we need out there is a FAQ with technical data in it (hint hint) becasue when you goto the stores asking questions they look at you askance like it is some sort of private club and the info is not given out...

(In my own case I got my 98 cub in 99 with no manual - they claimed to have mailed it, last weekend when asking questions about the hydraulic circuits the guy actually told me it was common thinking as to how it worked. Mebbe to someone selling them for 25 years...)

I have built two a wooden frames and put metal caster wheels under them. I can drop my rear blade on one and my 5'rotory cutter on the other. Sure makes it easy to hook up to 3pt. Also, lets me move them out of the way in my garage. May be able to do the same thing for your attachments.

Tom, they're all 3 nice tractors; definitely not too much. I have a B2710 and my cousin has the TC29D, and I don't guess either of us would trade with the other. Drive them and see which on suits you best. And I can't imagine you buying one without a front end loader; I think you'd quickly find that to be one of the most used pieces of equipment. I don't have a backhoe, but you might want to read some of the other messages on this and other forums. Very handy tool, but the 3-point backhoes vs. subframe is something you need to look into.

I'm not sure how this is a fair comparison. In terms of fitting a wide range of implements, I think the 8N wins. The 4100 is narrow, which means your available space to fit 3pt hook-ups is narrow as well. I've run into this problem when using old implements. As far as traction, 4100 wins by a slim margin. 4wd's traction advantage goes without saying, but you have to have the HP to match. The 8N properly weighted could probably outpull the 4100. The only real advantage of "handling" implements in 4wd is (1). 4wd by nature is heavier in the front than a 2wd. (2). 4wd ties your front and rear wheels to the rear brakes. This provides an obvious braking advantage on wet hills, etc.. over 2wd alone. If you consider traction as part of handling, then yes to that as well.
Although I haven't pulled a one bottom with my 4100, I think it could do it, but don't be surprised if you need to make two passes to sink the shear deep.

Let me say this about parts, I had to scrounge what I will call a couple of hard parts for this tractor. A pto shaft and a pto countershaft. It is a long story as to what happened, but it was not the fault of the tractor. Anyway, purchased the pto shaft through the dealer but for the pto shaft the dealer wanted a $1,000.00. After I picked myself up and dusted myself off, I contacted some of the grey dealers and ordered the part direct from Japan at $50.00 including shipping. So parts are available, but not always easy to locate.

I'd agree with Dave. If you already had a 6' cutter, and the weight was OK for the 3ph, it probably would work for light mowing (using a grade of shear pin appropriate for the 1510's PTO). However, I sure wouldn't go out and buy a 6' cutter for a 20 PTO HP machine. It just means that one type of work can be done fast, but heavier work can't be done at all.

The 3ph capacity for my 1710 is over 1800 lbs. I think the 1510 has a lighter 3ph, but the weight of most implements shouldn't be a problem. Good question for a dealer though.

Thanks. Guess that's the distinction I didn't know. 8N's have a 3ph but not a Cat 1 3ph. Sounds like many Cat 1 implements might work with a little adaptation, especially if the lower link pins are replaceable.

I have had my new Kubota 2910 for about a week and a half now and I couldn't be happier with my choice!I own 10 acres and will primarily use it for mowing and tending our hobby farm. I have so far done mowing, some landscaping and loader work with the tractor and it is the perfect size for my use.I saw some posts here to always get the bigger tractor if you are able but so far I would have to disagree with that philosophy. I could have afforded a bigger tractor, but if I had gotten one I couldn't do some of the things a smaller tractor can do. Not to mention the fact that driving a large tractor over one's lawn is probably not a great idea either. The 2910 is a great size for a small hobby farm and is really a nice machine!

I just recently received my Kubota 2910 with 72 inch mid-mount mower deck and R4 tires. A large part of my decision to go with the Kubota was because of its weight - it's 700 pounds or so lighter than the TC29/TC33 and the tractor was going to be on the lawn once a week mowing and I didn't want to run the risk of doing a lot of damage to it.

I chose the R4 tires as they seemed to be the most versatile choice for doing both mower and loader work. As far as any damage to the lawn I mowed last week after a day of dry weather (it had been raining off and on for about a week) and the only damage I did was when turning very sharply (don't do this) and I don't know that turf tires will eliminate this effect completely either. I did get a loaner 2150 from the dealer with turf tires on it for a week before I got my 2910, so I got a chance to see them in action also. Turf tires are definitely easier on your lawn than R4's, but you will sacrifice some traction elsewhere, as well as some sidewall rigidity when doing loader work. The turfs also give a bouncier ride IMO but are definitely the way to go if you're going to be working on turf most of the time.

I also debated at length about the 60 inch versus the 72 inch deck for the very reason you mentioned - manuverability. My final choice was to get the bigger deck as my intention was to reduce my mowing time as much as possible. I am glad I got the bigger deck although if you have a lot of obstacles to mow around and/or between, you might consider the smaller deck. I cut my mowing time from 3 plus hours with a 42 inch deck to less than 1 hour with the new tractor!

We have a good 600 twisty up and down feet to trench now for 4 inch conduit and more later. I am about to replace our current 1720 Ford with a 32 speed utility model (min speed about 1/4 mph, 80 PTO hp). A SSL attachment plate for the loader is my goal, for the versatility it offers.

Any thoughts on whether that setup would work with a trencher, folks?

Did you just buy the plans or did you get a kit from Metco Supply? How long to build? Does it seem to put a lot of pressure on the 3pt hitch? I'm asking because I have seen the castings on other tractors crack - but not due to a back hoe attachment. The pictures on their web site look good and the price is certainly right - compared to units at the Kubota dealer. These units also look similar to the units available from Northern Equipment (N. Hydraulics). Any advice and hints would be appreciated. Thanks.
