Does anyone have any experience with Allied brand 3 point hitch snowblowers? Would like to know more about the company before I spend the money.

John, that may be true if this was a problem strictly when engaged in 4x4, but with it disengaged, the front axle gearing makes little difference in the equation. I just used mine today, and it really does make a whining noise when the front axle is engaged going down the road. No, I was not on dry pavement! My road was very icy and I locked up the rear tires when I released the forward pedal too abruptly when the front wheels were disengaged. I have often wondered if they had incorrect gearing and/or tire sizes in the front to make it whine like that. And Bo, we hadn't heard from you on this posting for some time, and we needed your words of wisdom. I ain't kidding on that one. :-)

We have a JD4600 MFWD w/power reverser/460 loader/48 hoe. One HECK of a tractor. Clearing forest, pulling stumps, digging septic and foundation, cutting in trails this tractor has been worked hard and as expected it runs superb. Over 110 hours and not a single problem. This tractor can do more work faster than the smaller tractors (if that is important to you) and IMHO is built better than the smaller more consumer oriented tractors. I like the fact that it has a four-cylinder instead of the three and has more weight to it than any other compact. I also looked at the Kubota and almost went with a L-35 but decided for a couple of reasons to stick with Deere. Both are great, heavy duty work tractors. Oh, and mine doesn't scuff, either in FWD or RWD.

Blazer(maybe Blaser) used to make a light bar just like you guys are talking about for 4x4 trucks, Jeeps(Rule #1!) and such. It had forward lights, lights facing back, and I believe side lights. It looked very much like the lite bars on a police car. If I remember right, they had 100w or 150w lights.

If these guys are still around, they would probably be a good setup for a tractor. The bulbs would have to be changed to 50w, considering the alternater on most small tractors.

They were designed for a Jeep or truck, so the may be a bit on the wide side.

I'll look for the info in some of the magazines I have this weekend.

I did look in Gall's. They had EMS, Police and Fire stuff but not utility stuff.

Scott, Don't have any experience with JD here,as I have a New Holland, but as far as I know there is only one way to activate glow plugs, and that is when the ignition is turned on. My tractor you turn the ignition to what would be the accesory position on an auto ignition. Of course, I have a light, so I know when to crank. My F250 is the same way. I know glow plugs are getting faster, but immediate, especially in cold weather, I can't see. One way to tell, is when it is cold, crank the engine immediately, see if it starts as quickly. I know Cummings heats the fuel rather than the chamber, but that still takes a little time. I would have to defer to MLS for actual fact on that. You are correct in the post above that these guys all smoke when cold, but to hit only on one or two cyl. isn't right. Never had that happen, even in -30F. Always ran smooth too. We have a JD 750 diesel we use for mowing the land around the church. Two seasons ago it began to give us fits when trying to start. When you turn the key you here the solenoid click but the starter doesn't move. After a few million tries eventually it would start.We replaced the battery and it worked once. We have now discovered that if you jump it with a car it cranks right over, no problem. The minute you stop it dies again.I put a meter on it and saw that the AC charge was coming out of the alternator, going into the transformer, but not coming out in any form. So I assumed the battery was not getting juiced up. But a fully charged battery will not kick it over either.The local guy said he has seen similar problems and has put on a jumper to bypass all circuitry and run a hot wire straight to the starter from the battery/key. I tried his theory by using jumper cables straight to the starter. It still did not move.Any ideas?Bob Craen

78 inch was $1250. Remove the bucket and attach to loader frame. Looks like a
well designed unit, manual angle setup, springs for shock absorbing.

Shear pins & post-diggers; the trick is to bore the holes when the ground is soft so that rocks move around a little to the side. Also pull the auger up several times to get the dirt out on the way down. Otherwise you can literally screw yourself into the ground and can`t lift it out and get bound in the hole. All of which is hard on the drive-line.I`ve had to get my BIG pipe wrench and back it out of the ground before I got the knack.

Jerry, Maybe you didn't read everything that the news had in it. New Holland was available from fiat and case and cat was the suiters. Fiat was not satisfied with profits of N.H. and something was going to happen. It was Fiats money not N.H.'s. New corporate headquarters are in racine not amsterdam. CEO is from case not N.H. I think it is a great merger and makes a new #1 in the industry and within a couple of years under Russo should be highly profitable and definitly a undisputed leader.

While I cannot personally vouch for it actual capabilities, I use Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement just as a precaution in the winter months. According to its label, it can be used all year around to disperse water, maintain clean injectors and reduce pump and injector wear. If treatment is delayed in the winter until fuel filters have pluged or fuel has gelled in the tanks, then 32 ounces of this supplement is added to each 25 gallons of fuel in the tanks. Also the fuel filter needs to be removed and filled with the supplement and reinstalled. Except for the water removal, I doubt if I actually need the supplement in the Kansas City area since I purchase winter blended diesel fuel at a truck stop. I have no personal bias toward or against any particular winter fuel supplement--it isn't like picking a brand of oil (if you have been reading that thread on this bulletin board;-)

I agree with Kim H re Ford/NH getting lost in the shuffle. Germain to that is the URL for manuels.I just got a repair manuel for a Ford compact model 1910.It was $50 plus $7 S&H. With the Case/IH merger with New Holland/Ford I`d suggest get any manuels for older tractors while still available.

Hello, Paul. Its the same down here. Except that we do have a foot of snow on the ground - long since turned to a sheet of hardcrust and ice. Not the stuff for plowing with the compact. I guess that my larger old two cylinder JD with the Servis back blade (about 1000 lbs) could deal with it, but it would tear up the ground a bunch.
I'm glad to hear that someone besides me runs chains! Do you have them front and rear? Over turf or ags? Did you make them yourself or have them made? What do you like or not about them?

Thank you for the info. I was curious if I would be mowing in low range or if the tractor would handle the mower in high. I kind of thought it would require low but was hopeful (at least on my flat ground) Icould get away with a little high range mowing. The Woods RD6000 sounds similar in weight to the landpride 15 series deck you described. I've anticipated leaving the loader on while mowing or getting some bolt on weights if the loader turns out to be too cumbersome around the trees on the lot.
So far I have been very pleased with the loader. However, this is my first tractor so I don't have much to compare it's performance with. I've used the loader quite a lot this summer moving dirt around some new construction, spreading rock over a very large drive and in conjunction with a box scraper to do quite a bit of grade work. For the most part the box scraper (about 250 lbs.) for the five footer that I have served well as a counter balance to a full loader. More recently I have bulit a "home-made" 3ph weight that I found at a web site. I'll try to include the link. It works well and is much more compact than the scraper. It weighs roughly 350- to 375 lbs., + or - a few pounds.
I bought the loader new with the tractor and am glad I did. It really is handy, even if one doesn't anticipate doing a lot of loader work. I have taken the loader off twice since I have had it and it is an easy process. About 10 minutes either way to take it off or put it on. It is a much easier process on solid, level ground with something to "push" against.
I couldn't imagine buying another tractor without a front loader. It's just way too handy to have around!

Just got back from a business trip and saw that the oil thing is still going on. Wow, I had no idea people had such strong feelings about oil. I posted a message some time ago that approached the subject from the engine design point of view. Design is my bailiwick so I'll stick to that and tell you all right now I'm no expert on oil per se...thats a whole other career. I work for a manufacturer of large commercial equipment and I deal with technical issues regarding the care and feeding of same from customers worldwide. You all talk about your 30K spent on a tractor. Well its the same from a commercial operator who spends millions on their equip. Believe it when I say if it don't work, I hear about it. From the design perspective I can tell you this, the engines in your tractor/truck/car/etc. were designed to operate using the motor oil prescribed in the manual under a wide variety of operating conditions. And like anything else if you take one aspect of a complex mechanical system like an engine, in this case oil, you can go as deep as you want, i.e. micron filtration, SEM analysis, ppm water content...and on, and on, and on. It's all good data and I suppose it even says something to the lay person who wants to see something. You could do the same thing with metalurgy or bearings or combustion or fuel delivery, ad extremum. But, if you have an engine that was designed properly, manufactured properly, and assembled properly it will provide you with years of reliable, trouble free use for as long as you want to use it, by doing nothing more than using the oil specified by the manufacturer and changing it at the prescribed intervals. Now, of course an engine will eventually wear out with use, but it will also wear out in ways not related to the lubrication system and in time will still need overhaul or replacement. Believe me folks, equipment takes a beating out there. It has to work hard in conditions that would make some of you stand up and stare, and do it with very little maintenance because some owners just don't go there. However, if you are a company in the business of making cars or trucks or tractors or airplanes or engines or whatever, and you want your equipment to hold up out there in the real world, you got to design, manufacture and prescibe maintence schedules to the lowest common denominator. If you build engines that only hold up under ideal conditions and pampered usage, well you better get yourself into another line of business 'cause aint nobody going to buy your stuff. In summary, if an engine craps out before its time under proper maintenace and normal usage, it's the engine my friends and no amount of praying to the oil gods is gonna save it.
