 PTO Clutch slipping

I have a Cub Cadet GT 1554. When I engage the clutch the blades will start spinning but when I start to mow and get in heavy grass it stops spinning. If I stop the blades will catch back up again but then if I start back they stop again. Is there a way to check to see if I am getting enough power to the clutch? How can I tell if I need a new clutch? Is there a way I can check it?

If it has an electric clutch--the battery may be weak or bad. My small Ford garden tractor had this same issue. Even after a "new" battery (POS from TSC), I ended up using an automotive battery.

I will have to check because the battery is rather weak. I had to jump start it with my car last weekend. I will try to charge it with a battery charger and check this out.
Thanks.

Have you check to see if belt is slipping? I would think you could tell if the clutch is engaging.

The belts are new, and very tightly fitting. That was the first thing I checked.
Thanks for the reminder too!

If the mower is not running, can you hear the clutch locking when you operate the switch?

If not are you sure the safety switches are all working, you have all levers in correct positions and brake released? (I am assuming your mower has all of those.) Have you check fuses? EW may be correct on battery being to weak to operate the clutch.

Make sure to check that the pully that the belt runs through turns free. Mine was frozen up and also had a weak battery.
