 TC29D Possible electrical gremlin solution

So I've been enjoying the same frustrating electrical problems that many of you Go Big Blue owners have been experiencing... faulty gauges, starting problems, etc.

One of the issues my machine was having was that the glowplug light was coming on while the engine was running. This of course was sending voltage to the glowplugs in the running engine, making them run hotter than they should, eventually burning them out and making the thing a bear to start in the cold of the early morning hours. (If it would start at all!)

To solve the above problem, I replaced the glowplug timer module (P/N SBA385870301) at a cost of +/- $65.00. And I also put in a new set of glowplugs, +/- $35.00 ea. This has (so far) solved the major starting issue.

Many of you have experienced the problem with the main fuse blowing all the time. Easy fix for me was to replace the fuse holder with one purchased at my local auto parts store for about $5.00. Pop in a standard 30 amp fuse and presto... no more blown main fuses. And if it does blow, it's just a standard fuse, not a factory high dollar one.

Had another interesting issue with the starter and solenoid. Seems that the original (or replacement?) starter was installed with the factory shipping boot still in place. This made for a less than satisfactory contact of the main battery cable to the starter. Remove that shipping boot and get a good contact.

Finally, I also had to replace a few of the relays. (In retrospect, I think this was due to the faulty glowplug timer.) These are also an off the shelf item from your local auto parts store for around $10.00 each.

So all told, I'm about $200.00 in electrical parts and it seems to be working correctly. I really think the culprit was that glowplug timer. It's a costly little electrical part, but if that's what fixes it, so be it.

Good luck to you Big Blue owners out there.
