I purchased a supposed 1998 870 in Sept 2002. It had
about 400 hrs on it, nice condition. I just looked in a
parts catalog to buy all the filters etc. I need for a 500 hr level service as I now have about 525 hrs. According to the parts catalog my S/N (M00870B120624) is
a 1993 model tractor?? I also just changed what I believe
to be the original Japanese battery (Yusso or something like
that) as shown in op manual pictures which would likely support the age more at 6 years as opposed to 10 or 11 years. Is this S/N by year sequence list accurate? Even if this is a 1993 I am not sure the dealer (not a JD dealer) that had it on consignment or the owner (who did
not buy it new) was aware of the correct year model??
I love the tractor -- but I may have determined the purchase price based on a large error in model year. Do any of you tractor experts have any other clues to look for to determine year -- or is the S/N pretty much the story. I also have a signed bill of sale with 1998 on it. Strange.
Ed

According to tractortips the last year for the 870 was 1996, and your serial number places it as a 1993. ....

Ken is right. Your tractor was built in 1993. It was sold new Jan 11th, 1994 to David Frost in Sacramento, Ca. ....

JDF415 is correct. According to the Deere stuff, it was sold as used. Chances are the unit used as a rental/demo by the dealership, since there were no previous owners. ....

Very interesting. I bought it from a John Chapman via
a dealer in Placerville, CA that had it on consignment.
The dealer advertised it in the Sacramento paper as a '98
and the owner signed a bill of sale stating it was a '98.
I don't believe that '96 was the last year they were sold as when I bought it I accessed some tractor blue book type service and '98 was the last year for the 870?? i guess I
should call the dealer but it probably is another case of
buyer beware. ....

I guess I could see that the 93 was some how transfered to a 98. Hours are generally more critical than the year. As long as the tractor is in good shape I wouldn't quibble too much. You might want to look at the book values and determine what the difference is? My source lists the 4K. It also lists a 98.
Batteries will last up to 10 years. I had a Volvo (Varta) battery last that long.
In north america we had the Exide, the darth vader of batteries do a number on the industry. Mr. Exide was finally kicked out after they went in the red, so maybe the newer ones are better. ....

The information is through Deere Dealer Networks, and not directly available to the public. I suspect (this is a guess), if you visit a dealer they would look up the history for you. If not, send me the number and I will get you the information. ....

The x70 series tractors were sold through 1998. I just bought a 1997 970 (ser.# M00970B161049) and had researched the serial numbers. The first 2 digits of the last 6 digits in the serial number tell you the year, 10 = 1991, 11 = 1992, 12 = 1993, ... , 17 = 1998. On my tractor the 2 digits are 16 = 1997. On your tractor (M00870B120624) the digits are 12 = 1993. If the hours are low, you are happy and there were no significant differences between 1993 and 1998 I would chalk it up to another lesson of buyer beware. ....

1998 is the year the 4000 series were introduced. So there were most likely fewer 70 series produced in 98 as they were being sold down and all the advertising were pushing the new 4000's. ....

ncrunch32, some tractor and serial number information is at tractortips dot com, but they do appear to have some errors there as this thread demonstrates with the last year of production of the 870. ....
