OK, 560 hours and no problems. Now I see a drip under the front of the tractor. A very slow drip that coats a 2'x2' square every 2-3 days. At first I think it must be hydraulic fluid - but it appears to be diesel. I see it dripping off the oil filter and trace it to the top of the engine behind the air filter and just under the fuel tank. I spot a nest up there and a small black hose that appears to be leaking. By the way I keep the JD4310 tractor garaged.

My neighbor imported 4 cats about a year ago and my rodent problem has nearly disappeared.

Now I catch a mouse in the garage maybe every other month where I used to catch 4-5 a week.

The coyotes have killed two of the cats but the other two are keeping the problem in check. Unfortunately they have also reduced the cottontail and quail populations, but that is a small price to pay to keep the critters out of my engine compartments.

Dear friends,

I blow out my tractor's radiator and air cleaner after every mowing. (I also hang up the mower deck and scrape out all of the grass buildup.)

The other day, after mowing, I went to clean out the air filter and found a dead mouse in the filter housing.

The likelihood that I'll change my routine is very small, but I might take the air cleaner out to inspect it BEFORE mowing from now on.

A diesel fuel leak isn't as dangerous as some might think. Diesel fuel is not explosive, like gasoline. It will burn, but only after coming in direct contact with a flame. If it drips on your exhaust manifold, it will only smoke like crazy. Even an electrical spark will not cause diesel fuel to ignite.

I had a serious problem with rodents in the air cleaners.

It got so bad that on one trip away from home I noticed a real lack of performance on my Tundra. The air cleaner box was completely filled with nest material, feces and food.

My solution was to wrap the air cleaner inlet tube with hardware cloth. That solved the problem. ....

I have some good cats that get mice all the time and are in and out of the garage through the "cat door". But I guess I will have to give them a salary increase. Maybe they are on a work "slowdown". ....

A friend of mine told me last week about his rodent problemon with his tractor and the shop told him to spray the problem area of his tractor with diesel fuel and they will not eat on anything with diesel on it.

A couple of years ago had a real problem figuring out my planter's problem and it turned out to be mouse nest in a planter tube.

Have any of you had any success with these high frequency devices to keep pest away but does not botehr cats and dogs? I have been told mice are the reason for snakes around equipment and buildings. Best reason I know of to have zero tolerance of rodents. kt ....

KT,

I know, off subject, hope I dont get murffed. :-) Bird feeders attract rodents, birds, squirrels and other assorted cridders. But most of all they attract snakes. Chicken snakes, black snakes and the such. These are good snakes and will stop your rodent problems better than cats without the smell. On the other hand snakes take a nap in the winter. I have several snakes on my property and they have been there for a few years no rodents. Now poison snakes are another subject they have to go when ever found. Strolling around the yard after a few cool ones I may not be at the top of my game cant take that chance. SG.

Point of order, it was Retcol who said the off topic and obvious posts were detracting, not me.

In fact I'm probably the first to take a mental left-turn. That by the way is a 'Murfism'. I am accused of doing it all the time.

It works like this; You see someone pulling into the street up ahead and step on the brakes and you remember you have to check the brakes, this makes you think, when was the last time you had an oil change. An oil change is a dirty job, remember to pick up more hand cleaner, cleaner, must go to the dry cleaners.........

Some days I get a lot done, sometimes I even get what I went out do done. ;)

Best of luck. ....

KThompson,

Using diesel fuel as a mouse prevention tool falls along the lines of Carter's liver pills.

Use "Tin Cats" inside your buildings, next to all entries and exits. One on each side of each door.....or two per door.

Place the tin cat with the mouse entry hole tight up against the wall, very near each door.

There is no poison involved here. There are no springs to wind up, and NO ESCAPE possible. These things are great.

Every commercial establishment in this nation uses these devices, and they work very well.

From the web......

Tin Cat Repeating Mouse Trap
The Proverbial "Better Mouse Trap"

This repeating Mouse trap can hold up to 30 mice. The heavy gauge galvanized steel construction of the Tin Cat means it is long lasting. The low profile Tin Cat goes where wind-up traps can't fit.

It's safe to use; it doesn't require bait, poison, or resetting. The Tin Cat has a hinged lid that allows for easy release and clean up. It won't rust so it's ideal for damp environments. The multi-viewing holds allow for fast inspection of the All Metal Tin Cat.

Place Tin Cat lengthwise against wall or object with entrance holes nearest that surface. Available in all metal or with clear plastic top. 10.25" x 6.25" x 1.75"

363601 Tin Cat, with Clear Window (1.4#) $14.95 Temporarily unavailable
218011 Tin Cat, All metal (1.4#) $13.95

I've got 4 tin cats inside my building. They're so-so... I catch about a half dozen mice every winter, but there are times where this is plenty of activity in my shop, but no mice in the tin cats.

If you do get them, I recommend the ones with the clear tops. They're easier to check. I have both styles, and the ones with the metal tops are almost impossible to see if there is a mouse in there as they hide under the entrance ramp. (They tend to smell a bit if you wait a week or two without noticing them).

I bought these after using some of the plastic spring loaded traps. Those worked the best, but I had to weigh them down, as the partial kills would wonder off with the trap. I was also a little annoying when a parial kill happened, they scream like bloody murder! (Well, I guess that's what it is going on...)

KThompson,

It's the winters up here, along with the fact that I've been around the horn a few times in my life.

Someday I'd like to make it back to Salley, South Carolina for the Chitlin' Strut. Never seen anything like it since.

Looking at the "Technical Manual" I just purchased it looks like the diesel is leaving from a fuel leak-off hose. It looks like I may have to remove the fuel tank, steering, control panel, hood, etc to get to it. Oh well! In the meantime I think I can still use the 4310 for some small jobs. ....

Kenny it sounds like you have finally conceded (Kenny that means accepted, or agreed :) ) that northerners are...well...you know---smarter? And BTW that isn't necessarily due to living in da north, eh. We'd prefer to think of it as just having a good gene pool. (Though I have been told there must have been too much clorine in my family's gene pool---whatever THAT means LOL)

An' chitlins---isn't that a "fancy" (errrr?) way of saying cooked animal guts? yummmmmm (baaaaarf) ....

Earthwrks,

Chitlins is somethin real good like.

Rather than stuffing the pig intestines with sausage, as most folks do.........

they simply turns 'em inside out, scrapes 'em off real good, roll them them in flour, and then deep fries 'em in peanut oil. After they's fried up real good, they take 'em out of the fryer and puts 'em in brown paper sacks. In about 10 seconds, that oil saturates the paper bag, making it see-through, like that fancy Macy's lingerie stuff them girlies wear in the big cities.

In Georgia, we used that sheer lingerie for holdn' catfish bait on the hook. If you need a recipe for catfish bait, give me a holler. Catfish like the stinkiest stuff man ever invented, cept them thar chitlins. Even Catfish won't eats chitlins. Catfish is a whole lot more smarter than people.

3 years ago we bought a new car...well about 2 weeks later I was showing off the engine compartment to my father. Upon opening the hood i heard a rattling sound like something rolling around between the skin of the hood and the supporting structure. Turns out to be dog food, all stored up inside the cars hood. Sure enough corresponding hole into side of dog food storage container.

We eventually go it all washed out of the hood AND trunk lid. But to keep them out, we were told to put Irish Spring
soap cut up into the spaces....never had a repeat.

No kitties here, we've got 4 coonhounds!! ....

Just replaced the leaky fuel hose yesterday. Got a piece of hose from the auto parts store. Cost me $2 for clamps - hose was free. It was easier than I thought. I just had to remove the air filter, radiator overflow tank, and the support that holds the fuel filter to get at the hose. Life is good! ....

Say, I just found this older post -- I have a similar fuel leak. But I can't find the source! I may have to take all that stuff off to find it. I have had mice build nests in there, I know that.

But here is my real question -- you mentioned you took off the radiator overflow tank. Mine appears to have a crack in it, about half way up on the back. Who knows how that happened. But, when I try to loosen the bolt that holds it on, it just spins. The stud goes through the gas tank...how did you get yours off??

Thanks. ....
