I am looking to buy a tractor for the first time. I know someone selling a JD 790 4WD 30HP. 4 yrs old, 128hrs, with a FEL 5' bucket and 5' brush hog. He is asking $15900. Is this a good price?

Think you could buy a new one for that, minus the taxes.

not so sure thats a good price a new 790 was just quoted too me for 14700.00 with fel and included tax. the hog if its a jd is about 1200.00 bucks i think. anyway the new unit seems too be 27 hp aCCORDING TOO SOME literature others say 30hp not sure what they truly are i'm gonna be buying the 790 new i'm thinking unless something better comes along. seems alot too learn just too buy a tractor. its hard too get a straight answer too alot of questions. i looked yesterday at the long < farm trac> and the kioti all of which looks good and depending who you talk too as too how good they are i think i'll be going with the jd but kubota would be an option for me. i really hope some of the other guys here will give their opinion on the 790 i'm sure you are like me in that youd like the most tractor for the least money and the highest resale value i'm thinking the 790 is that tractor. most people say the down side too the 790 is the lite wieght 2000# and low lift capacity about its just under 800# of fel lift. hopfully others here will share their thoughts on the 790 i'd love too hear from some of them that have them. keep me posted on what you get and if you learn anything new i might need too know b4 i purchase. thnx

The 790's were previously 30 Hp, around a year ago (give or take) they were reduced to 27 HP due to slightly smaller engine (lost around 10 CID, if I recall).

Dave - I had a 790. I bought it new in 99' & had it until april of 04'(this year). Click on my profile & then click on posts by grasgod. Scan threw & you will read alot about it as I have writen many posts over time about it. I will answer any questions you have. It is a very tight unit. Get starter tractor. I learned alot on it & wouldnt change that fact that I started on it. The weak lift capacity was the biggest set back I will admit. I traded it in this last spring for a Kubota. I left JD for their addittude not the quality of the machine. I know own a L3130 which is signifacantly stronger. I had a bush hog, yark rake & backhoe for my 790. the all worked well with it. If you do decide on the 790, Definitly fill the rear tires with something!

I doubt you will notice any lack of HP on the 790, unless you try to run a 6 foot brush hog or something.

I have had three tractors, a 20 horse, a 22 and a 24 horse. I have yet to run into the circumstance where I ran out of power.

My RTV could use more power, but the tractors have been just fine.

E-Z Weight makes a wheel weight set-up for just about any tractor. ....

i'm so torn between the 790 990 or something with atleast shuttle shift i have no idea what too buy!its like $4000 difference in price with the 790 an 990 the hp difference is a lot but the lift capacy is ony couple hundred pounds more and lift heigth is only about a foot. shuttle shift or hydro would save on brake repairs but they are probaly very expensive too work on if the other bells and whistles fail. what would your reasoning be behind moving up too the 990? ....

Dave - I have a shuttle shift on my new kubota & love it! The 990 is a better unit for sure then the 790. 1' lift makes a bigger difference then you realize! Why are you so hell bent on JD? Go price a L3130....& demo it & I think you'll be surprised with what you find there. ....

You can get a L3130 without backhoe but with A laoder for about $17,900 but I've seen guys on here pay a few hundred less then that. I recommend the La 732 laoder....they offer you anouther laoder that is slightly weaker. The la723 has a very high lift react & can lift over 1400lbs. I laoded a triaxle with mine..i had to use car ramps to get a 6" extra lift but i was able to laod the triaxle! YOu can also get a skid steer quick detach bucket mount which is priceless. With that you can remove the front bucket in 3 seconds & attach anything they sell for a skid steer. I use a grapple for moving brush & a pallet fork so far with plans to buy many more skid steer attachments. I paid $15,000 for my 790 in 99'. I bought a backhoe for it a year or so later & paid $6200 for the backhoe. I traded in to Kubota directly & they gave me close to $14,000. I had to haggle the hect out of them to get the $14 k . I almost backed out of the deal 3 times before they finally said " Fine! have it your way, we'll give ya the money ya want." The L3130 has tilt wheel, it tells you every time you need to change your oil, has a suspension seat, cup holder & is alot quieter then the JD deisel. I dont think you'll find all these bells on the 990. I'm telling ya your going to like it when you demo it. Let me know what ya think.

When I bought my 790 two years ago, the dealer knocked 15% off the list price, then later said the markup wasn't actually that much and he had goofed, but still sold it at the price he quoted. The price you were given for a 4 year old 790 is way high. My new 790, used MX-5, and new FEL totaled a little over $14,000. Luckily, Mo. doesn't charge sales tax if the tractor is being used "agriculturally", so that also saved a bunch. ....
