I have A Cub cadet 5254 4wd shaft driven 574 hours, I purchased it from a fellow this past summer. a couple of weeks ago I decided to change the Hydraulic Fluid for Hydrastatic and Hydraulics Cub cadet calls for their own " Final Drive" lubricant at 50.00 a gallon times 5 takes 5 gallons. I ordered it online from Messicks changed Filter Greased etc. Since doing the Lube Change the Tractor has developed A what sounds like a Revolution "Clunking Noise forward or reverse sounds like something is clunking on the revolution Using diff or Not doesn't matter. I jacked it up today all four tires off the Ground No Noise forward or reverse I didn't have this before I put 5gals of Cub cadet Final drive lube into it Preventative Maintenance, Somebody Please Help Me Please

One thing to check is the square headed bolt that tightens the driveshaft adjustment. I have had mine loosen to the point that the driveshaft actually fell out several times. While I don't know that it would cause the noise you are hearing it is easy to check and eliminate as a possible culprit. Also check the alignment of the universals on the ends of the driveshaft to be sure they are correct. The universals should be 90 degrees apart from each other to be sure you don't get a whipping action. By this I am saying that when correct, one end of the shaft will flex in one plane while the other flexes in another plane. ....

Are you sure you got the instructions correct?

A quick Google search brought up the manual for that unit that says to use "Cub Cadet Drive System Plus oil" in the Hydro Transmission / Hydraulics system.

It goes on to say that the final drives and front axle run "Cub Cadet Gear Lube".

Nowhere do I see any mention of "Final Drive" lubricant other than the above reference to the front axle.

Best of luck. ....

Does the noise seem to be mechanical as in metal on metal or is it perhaps hydraulic in nature? If it is hydraulic be sure that the transaxle is properly filled. I imagine if the pump is sucking air it could result in a hydraulic hammering effect. Also, on my 6284 there was a manufacturers upgrade on the hydraulic filter that replaced both the filter mounting housing and the filter itself. I would have to go search to find the information and part numbers on that but I wonder if you have the wrong filter.

Ok, I've got it now. I didn't think that's what you had used from your first post.

BTW, IMHO manufacturers should not be allowed to make statements like that in manuals. I understand why they do it, I've personally seen people use the cheapest 10W-30 or ATF they can find instead of OEM fluids. However, I think the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act should be tweaked to force manuals to say "always use XXX OR EQUIVALENT...." but that's another story.

If you look on the label somewhere it will say that the fluid meets or exceeds some standard, any fluid that is equivalent will be just fine. $50 / gallon is beyond expensive. ;-)

Now, back to the noise, can you describe it better? A dull thud, a sharp ring like a hammer on cast iron? Does it speed up & slow down with speed? Does steering or braking change it?

Best of luck. ....

FWIW - I researched the specs on the hydraulic fluid for 6284 Cub very thoroughly. I found that Mystic JT5 hydraulic fluid had exactly the same specs as the Cub fluid and cost substantially less.
