Thanks to those who helped me resold the bolt issue on the driven. Since repairing it, and replacing the belt with an OEM part, I still have not resolved the issue that caused me to look under the hood. The machine shudders and labors when I first start giving it gas. It smooths out some as it begins to pick up momentum. If someone could checkout these videos, I would appreciate help with diagnosis. The noise seems to be coming from the secondary, but I did see flat spots on the rollers of the primary.

One video show WOT parked, the other shows the shudder while driving.

Hey Coach,

Our diesel Gator was behaving similarly. I ended up removing the driven clutch in pieces, as I was not able to get it off splined shaft intact. I bought a replacement off ebay and it now runs smoothly through entire speed range. It's been a while, but I think the primary is pretty easy to overhaul, the secondary not so much, especially if badly worn. We have 4 different types of utv's, and keeping them running is just a small part of my job so it's hard to keep them straight. If faces of driven clutch are not parallel, then gear ratio and speed input to trans is changing rapidly. Running with wheels off ground showed the problem for me pretty easily. ....

Hmm, okay I will start at the secondary. I wonder if spring pressure is too light causing the moveable sheave to open and up shift too soon. Not entirely sure I have that right. ....

I checked the primary agains and snapped a pic. Can someone tell if this condition might cause the shudder? Thank you again?

Was also wondering about the gap between belt and sheave. Is this acceptable? Thank you. ....

The center spring on the stationary sheave post pushes the clutch open and at rest the flyweights are against the rollers. Since your rollers have good sized grooves in them, that will allow the flyweights to go in further until contacting the roller grooved portion causing a greater gap between clutch sheaves. Also if one or two of the rollers were on the round portion and the other(s)were on the flat portion this would cause an imbalanced condition that could bind the clutch and cause the shuddering. Definitely a good place to start. ....

Excellent. Thank you Gatoraider.- funny, I didn't even realize they were grooved, not having messed with these before; My eyes only "saw" the flat spot. Quite obvious after looking at rebuild kits online. I see several kits around for rebuilding similar clutches (EPI, other snowmobile sources), but they don't seem to have cross references for Deere. Another puzzling matter is the spanner price, considering a similar Briggs unit costs around $8.00. The cost of a new spider is around $150.00, the kits being around $60.00 if I can find the right match. Considering Time to make the removal tools and do the job, can't decide if worth it, other than the enjoyment and satisfaction of fixing over replacing.
Decisions, decisions. ....

Thank you for the link, JLM. I did happen to read your thread last night, and was going to use your specs for the tools. I have a small milling machine at home, so if I can figure out a way to hold the part, I will fabricate the spanner. Any idea how much I will need to remove from the sched. 40 steel pipe inner wall? Wondering if I can use a flex hone, or if I will need to use a boring bar.
Thanks for your time. ....

The spanner I modified measures 2.25" ID. Since iron pipe isn't manufactured to anything near exacting standard dimensions, you'll just need to grab a piece, measure the ID, and determine the difference. It doesn't have to be a precise fit, so you can probably use 'most anything to whittle it down (including a rat tail file, if you've got the patience and endurance). But you're obviously - and fortunately - set up with more sophisticated options than that. ....

I saw a site called the gator guy who listed rollers. Any experience? ....

I got the clutch apart today, and found the weights to have a lot of play. As you can see below, there is a deep groove in the pivot pin. I assume that's out of tolerance and needs to be replaced. My thread guage got carb cleaner on it and I don't know the thread for these pins. I think it's 10-32, but not sure. Also, there seems to be a boss for a seat of some kind under the spring, but I didn't see one, other than some debris falling out of there. Also, the pins for the rollers are slightly marred, bit I'm thinking they are still useable. Any thoughts appreciated.
