I bought this Russian tractor a few months ago from my neighbor. So far I replaced a leaking hydraulic line and a piece of hose that goes from the air cleaner duct to the engine intake. It also has dual rear wheels that are calcium-filled but the outer right wheel won't hold air. Since the tires are old and a little dry rotted I'm reluctant to remove them for fear they'll disintegrate.

Now for the current problem: There is a leak in what I've been told is the injector pump. When I run the tractor the fluid leaks in the area circled in the picture. It ends up all over the fender and frame around the left side of the engine. I tried removing the two screws but can only lift the housing about 1/2" before it can't be lifted any more. Does anyone know what may possible causing the leak and how to fix it. I'm thinking it's a failed gasket and if I could get the housing off I could clean it up and use some Permatex silicone gasket seal to fix the leak. Any ideas?

Thanks, Jonny

Hello,

I would guess that it is diesel that is leaking out? This is the filler/vent cap to put motor oil in the pump. The seals went bad in the pump and you will need to rebuild or replace the pump. The pumps can leak diesel inside but not normally to this extent. The pump is easy to replace. Try searching for some salvage yards in your area or you can get a rebuilt one through harp2rs on e. PM for email.

If you need manuals download these

Good luck and keep us posted. ....

Thanks cowrider! I'm downloading the 250A parts manual and the T25A repair manual. Would this repair manual apply to the 250A?

I tried sending you a pm but I'd have to wait up to 2 weeks before it would be approved. Do you have the ability to pm me?

The diesel appears to be leaking from the area around the rear screw, not the cap. Would this still indicate the pump still needs rebuilt?

One final question...would it do any harm to run the tractor for a few hours with the leak? I have some gravel to move today and this is the only day in the next 2 weeks where the temperature's gonna be above freezing.

Thanks,
Jonny ....

Actually ekigary I didn't pay much for it and I'm sure once I get the bugs worked out it's gonna be a real beast. I actually used the PTO arms to lift the back of a dump truck that was stuck in the mud! ....

Hello,

The repair manual is the same and works for the 250as. I'd suggest to power wash the tractor and then you would be able to see any leaks or other problems on the tractor. I do this with anything I get. If you are getting this much of a leak from the pump and not any lines then I would say the pump is bad. You should still be able to run the tractor without damage just lots of leaked diesel. Check to make sure that it is not getting into the engine oil, if the front seal of the pump is also bad then diesel can leak into the engine. If diesel is in the engine as well then don't run it.

Another thing to watch out for on these are the bolts holding the axles to the transmission and the reduction housing. ....

I found harp2rs on eBay and he suggested I replace the gasket. Also asked if he could sell me one or I could make one myself. One thing that puzzles me is when I try to take off that holds down the gasket it comes loose but when I try to lift it, it only comes up around 1/4" then stops as though something is attached to it. Any ideas? ....

Hello,

Replacing the gasket wont help, that wont fix the problem. There should not be diesel in that part of the pump, especially not that high up, internal seals are bad. There should only be motor oil in there and then only to the bolt on the lower side that you take out to fill to. If you look in the owners manual you will see that. Having diesel in the pump and then that much it will soon start to get past the front shaft seal on the pump and into the engine itself.

To get the top part off you would need to take the side cover off and undo it there. There is a 4 part video on youtube in russian were the fellow tears down and rebuilds the pump. A guy on the belarus club translated it. Take a look at that.

You can buy just the high pressure side but the problem I think is in the low side. You could reseal the primary pump which may be leaking first. Kits for that are not much and easy to do without having to take much apart, it could be leaking into the injector pump. ....

I found out from harp2rs there are at least two versions of the injector pump and I need to determine which version I need before I order a replacement pump. I know this makes me sound lame, but none of the manuals I downloaded explain how to remove the pump and what to look out for (alignments, etc.)when I remove it. I need some help on how to remove it without causing any problems.

Thanks,

Jonny ....

You would have the early version of the two types of pumps. The new ones are not round on top where the fuel lines come out. The new ones have the lines in-line like the water cooled engines, you can see this if you look at the pumps offered on ebay.

When you pull the pump, pull the pump only and do not change the gears inside (picture 2, items 4 and 5). When you get the rebuilt pump it will come with the gear you have pointed out in picture 1. Even if the pump doesn't come with it the gear is keyed so you can't get it wrong. The timing is changed by the two inside and as long as those are not changed you will be ok. The pump gear will only engage the inside gear only one way. When you have installed the pump I would check to make sure the tach sender is engaged in the gears by looking in the oil fill with the screen removed.

After my last reply I started up one of my 250's to find that I was leaking diesel out of the vent as well when I had it at full speed. I drained all the diesel and oil from the pump by removing the drain plug on the bottom and the filled it with oil till it ran out of the side plug. It has not leaked diesel from the vent since. I can't say why this would be. You would think that if it leaks it would continue to do so. Could be that after a time of not running diesel fills the pump and when run this way will leak more? Sorry if I jumped the gun too soon at the pump being bad not that I see mine does the same. Come spring I will have forgotten what was done this year and start all over on the hamster wheel. ....
