I have installed a new pressure switch and the oil light still stays on. Any ideas appreciated. offgridman at cs.com
Batttery cable fell off while the John Deere 870 was running.

Thanks,
Warren Lee

Will the light go off when you disconnect the wire from the pressure switch? If not, then you have a short somewhere in the wire or the instrument panel. If it does go out, then you might actually have low oil pressure. You should get it checked before any engine damage occurs. ....

Did you ever solve the problem you had with the JD870 oil light staying on after the negative battery cable came off?
I am having the same problem with mine

Did you ever figure out why the light stays on . Mine is doing the same thing after the battery came loose while running.
I have installed a new pressure switch and it still stays on.
Thanks

Gridman, reread JDgreen's post.

He never said HE had a problem--YOU posted that YOU had the problem and HE asked YOU if YOU checked the oil pressure.

Did YOU do that?

Me thinks I know the answer. Noooo. ....

Yes, I did check the oil pressure it was fine.
I did check the wires and found no evidence of a short.
The oil light still stays on to this day.
I would like to fix it if anyone knows where to look next.
Thanks.

If I read this fully you did replace the oil pressure sending unit. No idea if this is possible but could the access to the unit be restricted in the block? If the old one was bad it is also possible the new sending unit is. You say the pressure is truly fine so have to be testing with a gauge to know that. The sending unit is an electric switch, my guess a ground that is open if pressure is low. That should be easy to figure out as if correct there is only one wire to it and it grounds through the sending unit of there two wires on it and one of those grounds to the tractor. If so doubt you will short out anything as you can only complete a circuit and not short circuit it. Disconnect the wire and see if the light goes off. If it does then my thought is there is a worn spot in the wire to the sending unit most likely...if the sending you is good.

Have you tested the sending unit to see if it is opening (If a ground unit) when the pressure is up? If you have not do you have any kind of electrical tester even one of the little lights? The disconnect the wire (if a short in the circuit you must disconnect the wire) and test the unit it to see if it is opening when the oil pressure is up.

Again, all this assumes your oil pressure is good.

I located the general area and will resolve the problem soon.I am currently repainting and repairing all the rusty spots on the machine. I reached up near the dash panel and wiggled the wires and got the oil light to go on and off a couple of times. Must be a short up there somewhere.
I will pull the dash once I have the rest of the sheet metal reinstalled. I had to repair holes in both fenders and rebuild the hood supports. Saved myself over two grand doing it verses buying new parts. ....

OK it took five years for me to solve this problem. It's amazingly simple.
Original problem was oil pressure light stopped working.
Then after I replaced the oil pressure sending unit (twice) the oil pressure light stayed on all the time.

The answer is.... When I replaced the original oil pressure switch during trouble shooting I had removed the parking light bulb and the oil pressure bulb switching them so I could test that the bulb was good.
Here is the kicker when I reinstalled the bulb holders I inadvertently switched the parking light and the oil pressure light positions. Since the parking light was set the oil pressure light stayed on... Duh.
The parking light bulb in the oil pressure switch burned out pretty quickly due to the switch being damaged while I was working on the fenders shortly afterward I had the oil pressure problem. Most likely because It was crushed by tall brush most likely and damaged. . I never noticed that the parking light (really the oil pressure light) came on every time I parked it since I always set the brake.
I decided yesterday to find the problem since I finally had time yesterday to find it.
I stopped my tractor after bush hogging and found that I had developed a tiny pin hole leak in the phram oil filter. I was luck enough that it had just happened and was still showing full on the dip stick.
This prompted me to take another look.
A simple reversal of the lights in the holes and a broken brake light switch about the same time caused me to think it was broken beyond the oil pressure switch.
....

That is the kind of thing you want to kick yourself after you have laughed at yourself but before you cry about it. Well something like that. You know, it sort of seems like they would have been different color lens or sizes or such so you would notice which light was on quickly. kt ....
