Hi everyone. First post in a tractor forum. I just bought a used 05 or 06 Terraplane 38 hp, 4wd, 4 cylinder tractor. It drops the rear attachment rather quickly, is leaking some hydraulic fluid and I'd sure like to get my hands on anything available for this tractor. Please reply by email or to the thread. thanks, Brad

While sitting on the seat, reach down between your legs. That's the normal location for the flow control valve that regulates the speed with which the rear lift lowers. It's made adjustable to cope with implements of differing weights. Obviously, the heavier the implement - the faster it will drop. You regulate that drop with the flow control valve.

Pretty sure that an 05-06 Terraplane is a rebadged DongFeng (DFAM). They're also marketed under the TaskMaster badge, and I believe it may also have been sold as a Branson. Either should hopefully get you pointed in the direction of a reliable parts source.

Other than the engine, this tractor is basically the same as our agtrac/artrac 3814. Your engine is common to the Jinmas and others, its a TY395 35HP engine the starter is different however. we can help you with parts and advice for htis tractor

Thanks for the responses. I am fairly certain my issues are with the hydraulic system. the two speed axle is very weak in 2nd. it feels like clutch slip as it won't hardly move even in reverse or low. also i can't get into 4wd. the tractor obviously had little care and was most likely outdoors all the time. i just want to find a repair manual for hydraulics etc. and a good repair facility near albuquerque nm. any more info is so appreciated! ....

Since this is a geared tractor, the hydraulics have nothing to do with the transmission range select - or with engaging the 4wd. At least that's what I think you're trying to describe. You believe you should have a dual range transmission (hi/lo lever) and a 4 speed transmission, giving you a total of 8 speeds forward and 2 reverse. Have you tried all 10?

Optionally, you might have either a creeper box or a shuttle box. A creeper is like a granny low, usually another lever marked Hi/Lo. It doubles your forward speeds to 16. Normal tractor usage will be in Hi, saving low for stuff like tillers and stump pulling. A shuttle shift takes reverse off the gear shift and puts it on a separate Forward/Reverse lever. It effectively turns an 8x2 transmission into an 8x8. But I've never seen a tractor with both. Usually it's either creeper equipped, or shuttle equipped.

First time users often have difficulty getting into 4wd, trying to move the 2wd/4wd lever on an immobile tractor. Engaging the front driveshaft is usually done while the tractor is actually moving. Try it. If that doesn't work, park the tractor on level ground. Put the transmission in neutral and release the parking brake. Turn off the engine and stand alongside the tractor, with one hand on a front tire and the other on the 2wd/4wd select lever. Rock the tire back and forth while trying to move the lever from 2wd to 4wd. IF that doesn't work, jack up the front end so that both tires can spin freely - and try again.

Best I can offer however - on the parts/manuals/service - is to Google for "Terraplane" or "TaskMaster" or "DFAM tractor" or "DongFeng" and "Albuquerque NM"

Thanks again, Greg. I didn't think the tranny or transaxle was hydraulic, just the clutch. The lever for "hi/low" works fine and yes I do have all 10 gears. The issue is in hi, the tractor just sits for several seconds until it will slowly start to move, making me think the clutch is not working properly or hydraulic action to the cylinder is weak. I own and operate a car dealership and mechanics are second nature. I just don't have a lick of experience with tractors. Thanks again for your fast responses. Brad ....

Again, apples and oranges. These are not wet clutch machines. The hydraulics only power the rear lift and the steering - and a front loader if so equipped. The main drive and PTO are engaged with a conventional (dry) clutch pack.

Your issue sounds like a slipping main drive clutch disc, but it's not necessarily shot. There are some adjustments that can possibly bring the clutchpack back into operating range. Is yours a three finger clutch - or a six finger? You'll have to remove the inspection cover on the side of the bellhousing to get that answer.
