Bought a JD Gator CX in June 2008 with a 9.5 hp Kawasaki engine. It is ready for it's initial oil change. I have look under, over and sideways and cannot find an oil filter even though the engine has an oil dipstick. I looked in the owners manual and JD website and it says the engine is air-cooled. In the owners manual it states "oil filter optional". Any suggestions, where the oil filter is or do I really not have one ?? thanks for anybody's help.

Yep, you're right, you don't have a filter. They are optional on the FE250 and FE290 motors and mount right on the side of the block. I'm sure your friendly John Deere dealer would be glad to soak you good for a filter kit. ....

Thank you gatoraider for the reply. I spent 1/2 hour looking for that darn think but that answers my question. Do you think I should get one? I will probably be using the gator at the most maybe 20 hours a year. I bought the gator in June 2008 and as of today (2-5-2009) I only have 9.2 hours on the meter. I can change the oil myself, so I wonder if I change it every year with the minimum amout of usage if I really need one. Thanx, Paul W. ....

Paul, I'm sure that many single cylinder Kawasaki motors without filters and with much more usage than yours have lasted for years and will keep on ticking without an oil filter. If I were you, considering your light usage, I wouldn't bother with a filter. My rule of thumb is if you can't see the dip stick thru the oil on it then it's time for a change. ....
