We want to buy a used Kubota or Deere tractor, 50-60 HP.

We're building a lot of fences on our property in CT, we'll need the loader and backhoe attachment to start.

Can anyone help me out with what models to start looking at?

Thanks

Wouldn't a posthole auger serve you better than a hoe?

It's better to have a bit too big than too small, but for fencing, do you really need that big?

I'd talk with local dealers to start.

originally we figured on a posthole digger. The ground here is mainly rocks, though, and we'd still have to dig them out by hand....

thanks ....

They are operator controlled hydraulic valves. A valve is needed for each function, for example on a loader one valve would control the lift cylinders and another would control the bucket curl cylinders. Often they are stacked together and operated with a joystick (forward/back to raise and lower loader and right/left to tilt the bucket up and down).

Sometimes a single SCV can control a couple of circuits with a diverter valve. The diverter would switch from one circuit to another. ....

You might want to look at a post driver for your fence work. They work quite nice in stoney areas.
Kubota M-series have proven to be a great series of tractors and would fit your needs well. Plus they are some of the best cold weather starting tractors I've seen even without being plugged in if it will get snow removal duties. ....

Thanks you guys.....
there is a post driver at another farm the company runs, i'm trying to find out what sie/kind it is.

We're now trying to decide between a Deere 5225 and a K5240

I know all makes/models are vastly different, but these are the two we've researched that are compatible with our needs.

We now have to decide between the two. This is our first tractor, and we'll be doing a lot of different things with it, digging, loading, some tilling, spreading, seeding and haying down the line.

the Deere is a 56HP and the K is 52.
People are telling me the Deere is more reliable, better for all-around work.
But a lot of people are partial to Kubotas.

If one of you had to decide between these two tractors for un-specified, start up general farm work, what would you do?
I know this is a very hard question to answer....but bear in mind, I am very new to this...

thanks ....

I'd do research on the dealers and buy from the one with the best reputation. If the dealers are equal then I'd buy the machine with the best "feel" (comfort, options, etc). If that is is equal I'd buy from the closest dealer or best price.

What are other farmers in your area running? ....

The K 5240I, is that a Kubota? I do not find it listed in the USA models. I do not find any "K" models other than in the gray market tractor (those not designed to be sold in the US). Be sure on your model and as an very pleased owner of two pumpkins, not sure of support or parts on the gray market models.

Kubota has a good web site on models link below. I could be very well over looked it. kt ....

i see mostly Deeres in my area.
and the Kubota is a L540HST, sorry i posted it wrong.

i'm also looking at the Deere and Kubota official sites, trying to find the specs on the backhoe and loader attachments but i can't find anything.

My company has intimated they "prefer" i do all this research online rather than talk to the dealers in my area. They consider that a waste of time.

Hence a lot of what i consider stupid question by me here. Again, sorry if I sound like a moron, but I kind of am, since I've never ridden a tractor in my life and learned all i know about tractors in the past three weeks.

Next question: why would one choose a 4WD over a 2? Since my land is very hilly and rocky, I'm figuring I need a 4WD. One neighbor told me I don't need a 4, because it will slow the tractor down. Another one told me get the 4WD because if I ever do need it, I'll be glad I have it.

So let me recap:
I've got 230 acres, hilly, rocky and wooded and swampy in parts.
I need the backhoe to dig hole to build fences because there are so many rocks, a posthole digger will take too long.
Eventually, I hope to plant hay, so I'll then need a rotary cutter and tiller, then a tiner and baler (am i correct?)
And what we're doing with the property is providing permanent homes for rescued and rehabilitated animals.

thanks everyone for putting up with me and being so helpful!!! ....

If it's geared the same it won't be much, if any, slower.

Tractors with loaders don't work well without 4wd - when weight is in the bucket it will shift the center of gravity forward, making the rear tires lose traction. You could actually drive into a pile of dirt or gravel, load the bucket and raise it up, and not be able to back away from the pile. Even with 4wd you can get into slippery conditions that are hard to get out of. 2wd tractors also have comparative lousy resale. ....

If there are no worthy dealerships there, sure would affect my attitude on buying a tractor, a machine which will require service and parts. Getting info over the internet can be good and even great. But it is a great place for preditators of all types. If you look here you will find it offered many times a lot of which tractor brand is right for you depends on the local dealership. kt ....
