Art: On another board there is strong suggestions that people should add STP to their hydraulic fluid changes and some of them talk like this is a given for HST transmissions. This was first I had heard this in 4 years I've owned Kubotas. Your opinion? Or anyone elses opinion that has worked on many HST transmissions.

Doesn't sound like a dumb idea to me......

It sounds like a REALLY dumb idea!!

I hear this 'idea' several times a year and still can't believe allegedly 'knowledgeable' people with tractor experience still recommend it!!

A tractor uses a single reservoir of hydraulics which the entire tractor uses for everything, the propulsion system including internal clutches, steering, brakes, diff. lock, 3pth & remotes.

Why on earth would you want to put something into a system like that which will supposedly reduce friction? A need for ineffective brakes? A desire to loose the diff. lock? A good reason to have to rebuild the HST unit when all the seals swell and get destroyed?

STP is designed to prolong the life of a tired engine, period.

Sorry for the rant, but silly 'advice' just peeves me.

Best of luck. ....

I have always looked at STP as a desperation additive for anything that is starting to fail, oh Hell let's just throw some STP into it so our problems will go away.

This site has talked about the problems Kubota users have incurred by not using Super UDT let alone throwing yet another unknown variable into the mix ;)

John; I gotta sing with the choir on this one, please don't. It don't matter the color of the tractor, pickup, car, anything that needs lubrication and filters follow the owners manual to the letter on oil and filters. ....

John,

I can add one thing....

Since I see you are new to this Board I thought it might be helpful to let you know you have just received advice from several very smart and experienced tractor operators. You could get advice from 100 well established tractor dealers of any color, anywhere on this planet and not find more useful, honest and field tested advice than from these guys.

Please listen to them and you and your tractor will be happy for many, many years! :)

Thanks all. Interesting that Bvance thinks I'm new to the board since I joined it 3 months after him in Oct 04. Guess new is by each persons perspective. My new L3240 is my 5th Kubota and I still own 3 of them. I brought the question to this board because of my respect for the members of this board. I've owned over 90 cars since 1964 and always heard the STP praise from some car owners. I never believed it for good running cars only for cars with problems and then it was a coverup for a problem that needed fixing. Thought maybe something different for tractors that I had missed. Again, thanks for answers. ....

John; Thanks to my Uncle Nick, I've had the opportunity to try every kind of snake oil remedy known to man. In the farm to farm sales business they must have had him marked. He would buy a life insurance policy, bug dust or what ever the salesperson had to offer, he had 23 small life insurance policys from 22 different companys when he died, and every one of them were good. Anyhow he used to bring over unopened DRUMS of Esentulube, fuel conditioners, magic potents for anything known to annoy mankind. He would buy this stuff, always in large quanitys, I guess it was cheaper that way, then be afraid to use it when it showed up so he would bring it over and give it to me. So IF I had time I probably could write a book on magic potients that didn't work. One of his purchases was like ten cases of STP. Nuff from me. Frank. ....

One thing that STP IS good for - it makes a darn fine case lubricant when you are reloading ammo. I've been using it for 40 years and not one stuck case - not a single one. I have had to extract stuck cases for friends and I always recommend STP to them.

But, . . . I don't put it in my truck or my Kubota L3010 or any of my restored Ford N's . . . I have never seen what value it brings to an engine that is in good shape to begin with ....

My first car had a power steering pump that had a whine to it. You could over fill it and the whine stopped (what the previous owner did) or you could add just a little STP and it stopped. Pump worked fine with never being able to locate the cause of the whine. Dont' remember ever using in anything else. kt ....

I asked a question on another site about oil viscosity contributing to an engine running warm and some suggested adding STP to my engine oil. My tractor is older and has a comfirmed low compression problem. It was in responce to this that someone also said to add to Hydrolic Fluid. Think I will wait on that. ....

John,

My bad. I just looked at the number of your posts and assumed you were a new member and didn't even think to look at membership date. Please accept my apologies. I also realize that if one does not post often, does not suggest he is uninformed...sometimes quite the opposite.

Again, sorry.
