I have used hard surface welding rods before with good results, but I prefer wire welding. I noticed the other day that hard surface wire is available for the wire welder. Is there anyone on the board that has used this wire and can you tell me if it works as well as the rods for a stick welder?

I have used it on a couple of backhoe buckets as a test case---reports from the operator indicate it wears just as well as stick---reports from me indicate its about 3 times as fast to apply---which is typical when comparing FCAW to most any stick situation.

Whats the name of it? Argon mix works with it? Can you X weld it? What size bead can you lay with it. How clean do do have clean surface?

Sounds like I need to talk to our welder guys. We have 6 loaders and a drag line and use 200+lbs of hard face a year. ....

The wire I was considering was a flux core. I think that it was intended to be used without gas, but you can use argon with most anything.

I don't recall the brand but would bet it's lincoln as the supplier is very pro lincoln--It was fluxcore, .045 size, and came in a 25 lb. spool. I used it in a LN-25 with a 400 amp inverter power source. One bucket was new and the other was VERY used and had been hardfaced before---I ground the paint off the new one and wirebrushed the dirt off the old one---I ran it at about 21 volts CV and if I remember I think around 175 inches/minute--I didn't pre-heat(remember this was an experiment). I ran some 5/16 stringer beads, some >1/2 inch wash beads, some X beads in each. It ran just about like most any flux-core wire although it sounded more like mig--ran right over the old hardfacing like it wasn't there!!! The only thing it didn't like at all was the new yellow paint on the new bucket!!
Try any large welding supply house that sells lots of lincoln wire cause I don't think there's too many flux-core hardfacing wires out there.

Thanks jerry. I spoke to our "Stone" guys and 1 had heard about it and looks like we're gonna give it a go. It will be early next spring before we try it.

Right now it's just trying to keep things running, till the end. Only about 7 weeks till "mother Nature" starts shutting us down. It's been 1 LOOOONNNNGGGGG summer. ....

McMaster Carr supply company has smaller spools. HS wire is expensive and if you don't need 25#, the three pound spools might be a better choice. They even have 0.035 for smaller welders, but the 0.045 is less expensive. ....

I'm a navy ship yard welder/pipefitter. I've done miles of hard facing on casting for the ancor windless and bow casting for the ancor chain. If I rember right, I use 110 tensle strength metal core wire, a metal core wire is a wire with metal powder in the middle like flux but not flux, so there isn't any slag to remove. The reason for the metal powder is that the manufacter can add any hardening, durabilty agent they want in the wire. I think the maker was Tri-mark. I could find out if interested. It was so hard that we changed it over to a softer wire cause it was wearing the ancor chains out. They figured it was cheaper to reface then to replace a chain that one link weighed about 25 lbs. each. Not going to find that at a hardware store. ....
