I would like to use this thread to post Home heating oil and propane prices here. It is a pain calling around for the cash price as I am buying on a "will call " basis this year from whoever is cheaper.

I bought Home Heating Oil here in NJ from AB Country Oil for 2.15 gallon on November 28.

Dennis

In Nov fuel oil tank topped off $2.64 from E&V Cortland, NY
Just finished the complete switch over to E&V with Propane $2.14 Mid Dec.

Surburban bought Agway out (we have dealt with Agway for over 15 years) and the prices went up. We were filled with propane late Nov at $2.99. They wanted $2.75 for fuel before Katrina. ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH. ....

Harvey,

I did business with Agway for 22 years. Like you said with Suburban taking them over, gone are the days of customer service, and up are the prices.

Don't think I will do service with them anymore. ....

Southern Ontario, US$2.35 / (US) gallon.

Don't even want to think about what propane is going for...

Firewood is about US$200 a cord for good dry hardwood.

Best of luck.

GEEEZZZZE never considered Wood! Around here hardwood split and delivered is about $130-$150 for a std cord. However it is usually advertized as a face cord for $40-$50.

I can cut my own for about $15 (and some sweat) a face cord and I use about 15 FC per season give or take a little. ....

I am getting a Jotul wood stove in two weeks, had to buy two cords for $180 each which is about the going rate down here.

There is a wide discrepancy in what people call cords, seems the majority use the two face cords is a cord which is about 80% of a cord. The guy I got mine from was the std 4x4x8.

I have seen some places that sell by the piece one guy called a cord 375 pieces, I was wondering how he goes about counting them? Sensor?

Most people around here sell wood by the rick. A rick, here anyway, is 4' by 8' by usually 18". So a rick is a tad over 1/3 of a cord. It sells for anywhere from 25 to 50 bucks a rick. That is delivered and stacked.

As in most places, even if people don't know it, or follow it, Canada has a law that lays out the legal units of measurement things can be sold in. Most of the US is the same way.

There is only one legal measurement for firewood, it is a "cord" which is defined as 128 cubic feet of stacked, split wood, ie 4' x 4' x 8'. You are permitted to sell fractions of a cord, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 etc. Units like 'face cord' or 'rick' are illegal.

This is where the term 'cordwood' came from to describe logs cut to 4' in length. Same with the old PTO-powered buzz saws, they were called cordwood saws because they were designed to cut 'cordwood' down into 16" lengths, or 'stovewood' the size a stove took. It used to be common to buy & sell wood in 4' lengths, big enough to be able to handle easily in bulk, small enough to move fairly easily by hand.

My family used to sell a lot of wood this way, I have some old family pictures labelled "Wood-cutting, Winter of 19XX" on the back, showing the teams bringing huge loads of wood out of the bush through the snow on big sleds, and great long piles of logs 4' long and piled forever. They were left like that to season until the following fall.

I'll see if I can find & scan some of them.

Best of luck. ....

Murf; Thanks for the info on a "Face Cord", I'd never heard that term. Between my Dad and two or three uncles of mine they had a buzz saw on the front of an H Farmall and somebody had a big two man chainsaw that never would start. I and some of my cousins used to help drag limbs to he buzz saw when we were kids. Most of the firewood around here is free for the taking if you want to clear some ones fencerow and clean up behind yourself. Mostly elm and soft maple. Frank. ....

How many gallons of oil do you use in the northern states for winter heat?

I use 200-250 total a year fall/spring, real serious cold snaps, and all fuel for tractor.

I use about 5 std cords of fire wood and that would be another $1000 if I had to buy it. Currently it costs about $225 estimate to cut myself.

My other cost is electricity to move air for the wood heat. The best guess is $25 or so a month.

I've heard neighbors complain about paying $400+ a month to heat their homes Dec-April.

I'd like to see what is realistic numbers.

P.S. Propane just delivered for month 18.8 gallons at $1.94.

Prices seem to have stabilized around here for a while. Rumor: fuel is going back up. ....

Harvey, I am envious of your electric bill. I have had electric bills as high as $350/month. There are only 2 people left here. Problem? Central air, pool, hot tub, 2 freezers, 2 refridgerators, 2 washers, 2 dryers, 1 beer cooler, exterior motion lights everywhere, security system, and probably some stuff I can't think of.

Sometime in the next few years I have to talk some reality to my wife, as retirement is coming up. I have started looking at smaller homes that don't have pools and hot tubs - but the prices and taxes aren't much better further north than what I am paying here. So we probably just need to scale back and stay here. ....

Not sure if western Oregon counts as a northern state, but our last electric bill was $280 for a 3600 sf house that is very well insulated and extremely tight. Temperature for 2-3 weeks of the month was in the mid 20's. Next year we're installing an outdoor wood burning furnace and radiant floor heat on the main floor to help out.

Edit: Forgot to mention that this was with propane hot water and propane cooking and some of the cheapest electricity in the nation at 6 cents/kwh. So much for a ground source heat pump saving energy. ....

Harvey
Here in NorthCentralWisconsin, I use between 400 and 550
gallons of propane per year, depending on the severity of the winter and the spring and fall weather. I have a 28 by 40 foot house with 2by8 exterior walls(fully insulated).
A small two bedroom house.
I also have a basement which is about 2 feet deeper than normal. Have 2 inches of board insulation on the outside of my basement walls too. I dont run my hot water off the propane, but I do have a 8kw backup generator that does.
I have low-E vinyl windows and 1/2 inch of the foil insulation under the vinyl siding(it also has a full 'wrap'). I built this specifically to reduce the cost of heating. It cools easily(with the deep basement) with just a couple window air conditioners and 5 ceiling fans. I just run the fan of the furnace, the air conditioners on low and the ceiling fans and it is very comfortable.

Sorry about the mix up on electric. Ours is about $145 per mo and I guess about $25 of that is for moving heat in the winter. Summer is around $100 per mo the other different is lights on longer.

Ncrunch our taxes r-not bad We only pay around $3500 for both. They have me assessed quite high considering the neighbor hood. The only 2 that were higher for a sindle family on some non ag land are on Skeaneatlas Lake. That really frosts my butt.

I do not feel to bad about our energy cost considering the size of the dump I live in. (Dump lots of money in therefore it's a dump). ....
