When trying to start my tractor I hear a click as a turn the starter switch. I must turn the starter switch off and on as many as 15 times before it finally turns over. I thought it was the starter and replaced it but I was wrong. Any suggestions?

That is one of my suspect also. But, I hear the click each time I turn the switch on making me believe contact is being made and something else isn't energizing. I started looking for a solenoid but couldn't find one. I don't have any electrical schematics so that makes it a little difficult. I guess I will pull the switch and test with an ohmmeter. I've bought parts from you before. Do you have the starter switch for the SP1540? ....

You may have a bad battery cable, or a very poor connection at one on the battery cable terminals.
If it's been a few years since you last changed your battery cables, you may consider doing this.
A faulty battery cable can still allow a small amount of current to pass through it. You may have enough current to operate your starter solenoid, lights, etc. A starter, on the other hand, requires a huge amount of current. Broken or corroded wire strands in a battery cable simply won't allow enough current to flow.
When checking your battery cables, please don't forget to check the frame grounding point. Every connection point must be good in order to allow enough current to flow.
The clicking you hear could be the fuel solenoid, or possibly the starter solenoid.......maybe even both. It isn't uncommon to have a small amount of power available from the battery even with very bad electrical connections.

The solenoid is on the starter. See if it will work when you jump across the solenoid terminals. I have a switch avalable. ....

I replaced the stater thinking that was the problem. It wasn't that as it does the same thing. Nice to know that's where the darn solenoid is though. It's really hot down here in Texas and I haven't had time to ohm out the starter switch yet. ....

I suspect Joel has hit it for you. You may wish to use jumper cables to the starter (not bypassing the starting solenoid or any safety switch) to see if that works if so right certain bad cable connection.
Had same issue with a battery and had to remove from battery and ream out the clamps. Seem to remember some issue with certain cable clamps over the years build up a glaze. ....
