I am unable to move the PTO lever out of gear. It was operating nicely on a rotary mower when the problem occured suddenly. The clutch seems to be opereating the transmission gears smoothly but will not release the PTO. Any Ideas??

If it's a gear tractor, check that the clutch pedal free-play is adjusted within spec. If it's in 4wd, try putting it into 2wd and backing up the tractor a bit. If it won't go into 2wd try lifting the front wheels with the loader. Those are the easy fixes. Hope there's nothing wrong with the tractor. ....

Thanks, Tom. It is a 2WD model. I'll check the clutch play this morning. ....

I took the cover off of the gearbox and discovered that the PTO gear selector shafts were somehow jambed by the ball on the bottom of the gear shift lever. Opening the cover solved the problem. The detents in the selector shafts are squared and apparently can easily become jambed by the lever if they are in a particular alignment.
Easy fix, though it might become a pain if it happens often. ....

Sounds a bit like my '53 Chevy that used to lock in second occasionally. It just took pulling up on the 2nd gear-shifting lever to fix it but I was still happy it didn't happen very often. If the problem persists and it's a worn detent ball, I did hear a story where somebody fixed up one on an old Ford by welding on the ball. He said it worked pretty well but I'd probably look a new part if one could be found at a realistic price. ....
