I never had a tractor before. This is my first, used tractor.

I purchased this tractor last year and had some problem to start. The problem is that the starting motor was turning, but didn't engage with the engine from time to time. Then I had to wait for 15 seconds and tried again, again, and again. It engaged with the engine and started. It had no problem to operate after started.

Now, I can hear the starting motor turning, but couldn't start it at all . Is anyone could help me to solve the problem? Thanks

Gin360,

My first guess would be a bad bendix.....the part that throws the starter's gear out against the flywheel. This will cause the problem you're describing.

Another possibility is that you've lost a tooth or three on the flywheel. Depending upon which position the flywheel is in when the tractor is shut off, This problem would appear from time to time.

If you have a manual transmission, you could get someone to pull you down the driveway a few feet and let the clutch out for a fraction of a second while in high gear. This will get the engine to turn over a bit. Try the starter again. If the starter now engages, your problem is likely with the flywheel.

Hope this helps.

Here's a youtube video showing how the starter works when engaging the flywheel. This might better explain the situation.

Click on the link below.

Hope this helps.

Dear Joel,

Thank you for your prompt response. We have so much snow on the ground now. I w ill try the method you describe as soon as weather gets warmer and let you know the outcome. I couldn't wait until then.

Young,

I don't know much about Long tractors. I've only seen one before. If you have a manual transmission, it's possible to pull start the tractor. You don't need a starter.

Get the engine warmed up. Use a space heater, torpedo kerosene heater, or your electric block heater. Now energize your glow plugs for one or two cycles. Once the engine is ready to go, have somebody help you pull start the tractor.

Put your manual transmission in high gear. Putting the tractor in high gear is important, as this will allow the engine to spin over much easier. Turn your key to the run position. Get going down the driveway and then let the clutch out. After a few spins on the engine it should start right up for you. QUICKLY depress the clutch once the tractor is started, as you don't want to run over the vehicle that is towing you.

You can now use your tractor as you normally would. Don't shut off the tractor until you have it parked where you want it for service work.

Hope this helps.
