I am having a new qaurtze counter top installed in a month or so. Was wondering HOW they mount undermount sinks? Especially when they are of the extremely heavy type? Any info on this? I am not doing it myself but was wondering how they do it? Thanks

The small under counter sinks I installed in the bathroom are basically glue and screw. They have small Hilti type fasteners into the stone with clip that hold he back of the sink, after you glue with RTV the top edge of the bowl. ....

We have a stainless steel sink undermounted with a granite counter. The sink has a lip all the way around the perimeter that is sandwiched between the plywood deck and the granite. If you go this route be sure to get a heavy gauge sink. There are stories of thin gauge sinks getting fatigue cracks and it would be a real pain to replace one that is mounted like this. ....

Still other sinks have a stainless steel rim that lies nearly flush on the counter top. THe sink then is held under the counter to this rim by bolts and small brackets. The brackets grip the rim and the bowl and the under counter area and pull everything down tight. Caulk under the rim for a water tight seal. ....

My undermount sink is held up by 1x2 pine boards screwed into the walls of the cabinet on all four sides; make sure the sink is supported on all four sides, sometimes that means having to move the faucet to the side of the sink instead of having it installed on center. My installer told me a story where a woman insisted on installing her faucet right on center which prevented the installer from attaching any support for the sink on that side of it; when the woman proceeded to put a 40lb turkey into the sink, the whole thing collapsed. ....

horse_farmer,

I have seen some big Turkey breasts served in cafeterias, but I always wondered if they were actually some larger species like an Ostrich ;0). Your point is well taken.

Brokenarrow,

I have dual undermount stainless steel sinks in my kitchen. They are screwed into the granite countertop, the main one is jumbo sized but being stainless is pretty light. Had this setup for eight years no problems.

Our setup one Jumbo undermount with a smaller undermount next to it, with a single plateless faucet with the pullout hose all in one looks great. The only issue is that guests frequently don't realize that there is a counter level 3" piece of granite between them so if they push the running faucet between them you get water all over the place.

They do make dual sink undermounts now, so I would do that instead now.

The heaviest turkey ever was 86lb, so I'm sticking with my 40lb turkey story (then again, maybe my contractor exhagerated a little to make a point). ....

Whats a few pounds either way amungst friends?
A sumo turkey is not un heard of.

I had bought a "Jacuzzy" under mount porcelin double bowler.
Yes its large and yes its heavy! It will go underneath a Qaurtze counter top. This is why I was wondering about attachment. Everything is gaurenteed if I have the counter top installers install it. Yes, they will be installing it. The cost for them to finish the job (installing) the sink is a fraction of the cost of the counter top so that being coupled with my lack of knowlege of under mount sinks pushed me into allowing them to mount it. The worries I have are based on the "cut out" and the fear of breaking the counter top. After it is installed I will let ya all know how they proceeded with the install.
I have enough "honey doo's" on my list with this re-do of my kitchen. (PS) The kitchen re-do led to my better half telling me that the powder room needs to be done to match the kitchen. That led to her asking me to update the two up stairs bathroom floors (to tile) and the counter tops, from laminate to a qaurtze also. I will be doing all the rest myself so I figured this "start" will give me a template to base my actions by.
Thanks for all the responses ....
