My 2304 is overheating when using a 5ft finishing mower on my 2 acre yard. Hoses and belts and fluids seem fine, tractor has 1100 hrs. Someone said the thermostat is same as 91 Honda Accord, is that right? Tractor is great in every way except for this. Any ideas? Thanks

Have you checked the fins in the radiator for seeds, dirt, debris? If they're the least bit clogged that reduces cooling efficency. There might also be a pre-screen ahead of the radiator to filter out the big stuff--it needs tobe clean too. A clogged air filter will make it run hot too. Add those two issues together and it's not good.
Something I had happen to me on my NH was there were two rubber hydraulic cooler hoses that sprung a leak to the point oil misted out of them and clogged the radiator fins which quickly led to it being clogged with dusty dirt. ....

Thanks for the reply. Everything on the tractor is clean as a whistle, no debris, no leaks or anything. As far as I can tell it is an internal issue. I will take the thermostat out completly and see what that does. This tractor should easily mow yard grass with a 5ft King Kutter mower right??!?
Any other specs on temp or thermostat are appreciated.
Thanks,

You have not mentioned if this equipement is new to you or not. Did it use to run this mower on this yard fine before, is this problem new or is the tractor and/or the mower new to you? I run a 20 hp at the pto with a 6 foot finishing mower and it does fine. On my thickest grass, I do have to slow down ground speed.
If this problem is new, then something has changed. IF what EW pointed out is not it, is it possible the radiator is clogged? Could the fan belt be slipping? Water pump not working? (you have already discussed the thermostat) Is it only when using the mower you have this problem? If so have you checked to be sure your mower is fine? Can you by hand turn the PTO shaft? If not there may be an issue with your mower in greabox or such. Is it possible you are using to high a ground speed? Will depend on how thick the grass is, how much you are removing and such. Are your blades sharp? Are you running the engine at proper RPM to get the needed PTO speed? ....

Thanks for your input guys. It is a new mower and so this is uncharted territory for me. The tractor has just been used to grade the driveway and such up to this point and has had to problems. Changing ground speed did not change how fast it got hot. I'll get into it Tuesday and see what I can find. Thanks again!

Make sure you have the proper mix of coolant/water, ususally 50/50 but check owners manual. ....
