I still need help to find out if it is possible to install power steering on a 235 since Case never offered it as an option! I really would appreciate any help.I don't think there is enough room to install a torque generator on the steering shaft. thanks for any help.

This could get to be a complicated subject, but mostly because I don't have the expertise to make it simple. I believe there are after-market conversion kits for some older farm tractors. If a ready-made kit isn't available I imagine that a properly engineered custom designed set up would be more expensive than desirable. The force and motion of a power assist can't exceed the limits of the original steering system and anything would shorten its life.

However, you might look at hydraulic servo actuators. The systems of much heavy equipment including farm tractors really don't have a mechanical link between the steering sector and wheels. For example, servos instead of solid drag-links are used. A more conventional system may use a double acting cylinder between existing steering members or a member and the frame, but these systems may be harder to engineer since the distances traveled by steering members and the cylinder likely would be different.

Many modern control systems for servos are computer based. They are small and could be rigged most anywhere steering motion could be detected. Many make use of the steering wheel shaft itself. Steering shafts have end-play. When force is applied to the steering wheel the shaft moves up or down slightly. Of course, a laser can easily detect rotation of the shaft as well.

The power assist control on my Ford is mechanical and does work on steering shaft end-play. It isn't very large (sort of like a collar around the shaft) but it does have hydraulic lines to it. Mine is just above the sector but I think some are higher up the steering shaft. There might be room for such a device but a computer controlled one would be easier to mount I imagine. If you're skinny, a bigger steering wheel would be easier.

Yes and I agree too. I was just thinking through the problems of doing a conversion. I don't think I'd want to actually do one. The problems seem many and big.

If my larger steering wheel idea doesn't seem very practical, a 3ph ballast box might be a realistic alternative that's a bit short of a different tractor. ....
