A case 235 diesel, with mid mount mower, used for grass cutting on small farm. Had a new radiator, top overhaul, water pump looks OK, tractor works well. BUT after an hour of work at full or near full throttle, BOILS. Has anyone any suggestions. I'm tearing my hair out

If the new rad used an old cap, I'd run a pressure test on the cap or just replace it. The coolant will boil at lower temperature if the cap doesn't hold pressure. I'd run the engine at temp and high RPM and look to see if the coolant is flowing, which would check if the thermostat is opening. I'd also look for bubbles in the coolant, which is a rough test for a leaking head gasket. If it's a very new top rebuild, there might be some break-in heat problems that might cure themselves.

That's the easy stuff off the top of my head.

I had a 234 that would overheat on occassion. Usually it was caused by dandelion fluff getting in the coils. I would either blast it out with air or try to spray it out with a hose and water. ....

Gents, is this the Case built by Mitsubishi, the one with the 3 cylinder diesel? If it is, I may have the solution to the problem (forgive me if it is different from the series I am going to write about here). Case was the first importer of what we see today as the Cub Cadet 7000 series utility tractors. Essentially the Case and Cub Cadet are very close and many parts, although having different part numbers, are interchangeable. One of the main reasons Case backed out of importing the Mitsubishi line was because of major cooling problems. I know one landscaper who had just about given up on his 2X5 when I told him about the Cubs. MTD worked with Mitsubishi to eliminate the overheating, here are the changes they made: new radiator design having more cooling (tubes) passages, higher pressure radiator cap (good catch Tom G), side panels with vents that draw outside air directly to the radiator, a new radiator trap screen with larger mesh (earlier mesh screens clogged quickly with fine material), new thermostat, and finally the fuel injection system had minor changes. How did my friend save his cools? New Cub Cadet radiator, new trap screen, full system flush under pressure, and adjusted the fan belt to spec.s, these simple changes worked for him. The dealer did the work with only minor metal changes. I'm really surprised Case offered you no solution, I was under the impression they retro-fit many Mitsubishi-Case tractors to solve this very problem! Talk to a Cub Cadet dealer if your 235 is a Mitsubishi and see if they can help, if your Case dealer can't. You may have to do some digging around to find the right bits, but it is cheaper than a new tractor. What could it hurt? Good luck. ....

Ted, prior to Case marketing the Mitshu line IH had it. here in the northeast we have not had to much trouble other than the dandelions previously mentioned. You are right with the venting and the changes as they would help to keep the engine cooler. Other than the cap that seem to be the only thing left. ....

Thanks for the history, Art. I had no idea the Mitsubishi line was sold by IH. My familie's last IH was a 1962 Cub, you know, the one with the yellow and cream paint and offset engine. We ran that one right up to when we bought the first Cub Cadet 7000 in '95. Guess we just blew right past the IH Mitsubishi. Oh heck, now I know what happened. Eight years of USAF and Viet Nam, no wonder I don't remember, I wasn't home. By the way, I visited your web site recently, very nice work. You've improved it quite a bit since the last time I looked. Thanks again,
Ted ....

Thanks for all the replies.
Yes the engine is the 3 cyl. Mitsi version. Trust me to get the dummy!!
I found that there was a problem with fluff in the rad, we went thru a dry spell & I was just cutting dust. Unusual for New Zealand.
I seem to have solved the problem with a radcap of 10psi instead of the original 7psi.
The rad is a 4 layer core, is that the modified one?
What are the cutouts on the side of the cowl. There seems to be heaps of room to get a cat in there as it is.
Can you point me to the revised injection timing instructions. The NZ agents don't see many of these Dinky toys, so they are at a loss to know what is what.
ttfn brian ....

Ted, the models just had a 4 at the end instead of a 5 and they were in the earlier 80's for introduction. Same tractor just a little different sheet metal. They did have problems with the radiators clogging and they did need to be cleaned often when mowing. ....

KenAmr
yes I seem to have fixed the problem. I have been cutting (very green) grass at about 10inches deep, taking off the first 6 inches - on steep hillsides, thanks for the hydro drive - for a couple of hours with no overheating problems.
The rad cap must have been the problem.
Thanks team.
What I would like to know now is who are the people who did the mods to the engine - big rad, air scoops etc., & where can I get in touch with them
In NZ the local dealers can find no mods at all on these tractors. I have heard of several other owners here with the same problem.
ttfn brian ....
