I have a 980 C wheel loader which needs a new motor.
The motor is a Cat 3406.
Does anyone know if any other cat motors are compatible with this one without any frame modifications??
I'm hoping to find a 2000+ yr engine for emmission reasons, yet any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks
Salty

While I'm far from an expert on that machine or particular engine, it my understanding that all that stuff uses an industry standard mount and bell housing setup, thus nearly any engine would fit.

Things like rad hoses, wiring, fuel supply lines, etc., might turn into a PITA, but the basics should be there.

As a pointer though, you might want to talk to your local heavy truck repair shop though, they would know the best since they deal with those motors every day.

Best of luck. ....

Based upon a few years in factory that built heavy equipment you might find the engine mounts will vary and possibly location of radiator and of course some small odd and ends. However the drive train end probably will be same for you. We used Cat, Cummins, Detroit and Deutz all with same drive train. kt ....

There are a ka-zillion 3406's out there. Whats wrong with yours?

The torque curves, unless designed for a loader, may be unusable from a truck to a loader.

Kits are avaiable from many sources for any aspect of the engine.

I think I just received a "Parts connection" rag. It is almost 1/4" thick with you name it and many many different sources.

The newer engines are going to be electronic and your loader will have to be compatiable.

Stay with the C or older B have the pump set by a good tech for cleaner burn vs power. ....

Search and see if you can find a wrecked over the road truck with a Cat 3406. This was a VERY popular engine in these vehicles. Harvey is right. Unless yours is T-totaled, it might be better to do a rebuild on the motor you have. In frame rebuilds are very common on trucks with these engines but may not be practical with your wheel loader and you may have to pull the engine. ....
